View Full Version : Descendants of Ashley Cooper
Ashley had a son John Cooper who died, unmarried in 1843. His will named his illegitimate daughter and all his neices and nephews.
The daughter must have died about 1887 and then the search was on to find Ashley's descendants. I have just found a newspaper notice, asking the lost ones to get in touch.
They should have had the internet.
One was Samuel Popple, son of Joseph and Susan Popple. By 1881, he is in Castor, Northants as an innkeeper, with three small daughters. The only candidate for a wife is Emma Little, but this marriage is in Hackney in 1874.
Can anyone find any details on this marriage?
The same one that is widowed in 1871 census?
That's the boy. He marries Elizabeth Glitheroe, and it looks as if she had just died, aged 41 in 1871.
I don't think they were married in 1881:
Samuel Popple m 3 Jul 1883 of Castor to Emma Mc Ewin at St Marylebone.
Just cooking tea, so will type out the rest when I come back if no one else has.
Lol!
I'm just too naive!
Yes please, Merry. As I'm blowed if I can find which Emma she is. Mc Ewin doesn't sound a Huntingdon name to me.
Right, time to look and see if he had the right father!
Yes!
4th July 1883 St Marylebone, Westminster
Samuel Popple, 41, widower, baker, Castor Northampton, Joseph Popple, farmer
Emma McEwin, 34, widow, 23 Lodge Road, St Marylebone, William Branson, builder
By licence, both signed, witnesses J J Pledger and A Burnel
Emma is with her parents in 1851 and 1861 and a servant in London in 1871.
Emma married Edwin McEwin (full, bachelor of the parish of Langham Place) in St Marylebone in 1873 (22nd May). He was a confectioner, the son of John with the same occ.
That m was by licence too and the witnesses were J and A M Hines (I think)
Emma's details are the same as on the other marriage (well, you know what I mean - not exactly!)
Edwin McEwin was b abt 1840 in St Marylebone and is with his family until 1861. Then I can't see him and I don't see a death in that spelling at all!
Brilliant!
I begin to see why they might have put off the marriage for a bit. I am blowed if I can find a death for Edwin.... unless he is the Edwin McEwen who dies in Chelsea in 1915!
Snap, Merry!
I've found an online tree showing that he had a daughter. Looks like the sort of person who couldn't cope with marriage, though.
In 1901 he is single lol and a baker in St Pancras.
I looked at her, I think I found a Huntingdonshire connection, cant remember now ( had my tea since then! lol)
Thank you both!
My computer is playing silly devils with me and I've been trying to get back on for the last hour or so.

It was a good job Samuel was still alive in 1887. As Emma's children were all illegitimate, none of them would have got a penny.
