BK6 updated from this thread

I don't think I've asked this before :o

Daniel Caton, b 1817 Kempston, Beds, married Hannah Cooper in Luton in 1838.

By 1841 they had two children, Jane (living with Daniel's widowed mother in 1841) and Ann (reg Q2 1840 in Luton).

These two girls were not baptised until 1845 and 1846 in Luton.

By 1851 Daniel is living with Sophia (Brown), saying he is married and they have two younger children as well as Jane and Ann. I have all their details coming forward.

I cannot find Daniel, Hannah or baby Ann in 1841, yet on my tree I have given Hannah's birth details as "Abt 1819 in Bedfordshire" with source detail as "1841 census".

I have not been able to establish what happened to Hannah.

UK Census Online lists a Hannah Caton, age 20, Straw Bonnet Maker Journeyman, in Bedfordshire, and an Ann Caton age 1 in Bedfordshire.

There are a few Hannahs with no surname listed in Luton on ancestry, but the names are impossible to make out on the images so I don't know if she could be on this page, for instance:

And there are a couple of Anns age 1 listed in Bedfordshire with no surname on ancestry, again I can't make out the names on the image but this could be a possible:
ancestry (http://interactive.ancestry.co.uk/8978/BDFHO107_4_5-0144/2368607?backurl=http%3a%2f%2fsearch.ancestry.co.uk %2fcgi-bin%2fsse.dll%3findiv%3d1%26rank%3d0%26gsfn%3dann* %26gsln%3d%26sx%3d%26f1%3dBedfordshire%26f2%3d%26f 3%3d%26f18%3d%26rg_81004011__date%3d1840%26rs_8100 4011__date%3d0%26_82004011%3d%26_82004013%3d%26f7% 3d%26f20%3d%26f8%3d%26f9%3d%26gskw%3d%26prox%3d1%2 6db%3duki1841%26ti%3d5538%26ti.si%3d0%26gss%3dangs-d%26pcat%3d1841UKI%26fh%3d1%26h%3d2368607%26recoff %3d6%26ml_rpos%3d2&ssrc=&backlabel=ReturnRecord)

I haven't got an FMP sub at the moment but they also have some Hannahs (and a Hanah) and Anns with no surname in Luton, some of the right age, some with no age.

Maybe the images on UK Census Online are clearer, given that they have managed to find some Catons? But of course you have to pay to view images on that site. I thought you could buy credits, but it looks as though you have to pay a sub for a month at least (£14.95  )

FreeCEN has no Bedfordshire 1841 coverage.

That's very interesting Kate, as I was very surprised to see I had anything to do with the 1841 census recorded for this line on my tree given how long ago I did the research. Goodness knows how I managed to make 1819 from 1841-20 though!! I would normally record that as "about 1820".

Thanks for your help Kate.

UK Census Online lists a Hannah Caton, age 20, Straw Bonnet Maker Journeyman, in Bedfordshire, and an Ann Caton age 1 in Bedfordshire.

Daniel was a 'bonnet blocker' in the criminal records, so poss a family trade. Realise there was a lot of hat-making in Luton, though.
