Please, would someone put me out of my misery and confirm that a Jane Lanning, daughter of Sarah was baptised in London in 1844?

It seems unlikely, but I think that the Jane Mahala Lanning b 1834 must have actually been b 1844.

This is on the basis that George Lanning marries Mary Taylor (we think from Castle Camps, Cambs) in 1819.

Sarah is the first known daughter born c 1826. The chance of anyone having an illegitimate daughter aged 8 seems impossible, and if we have missed a sibling, that girl having a daughter aged 14 or under seems unlikely.

There's a Joanna Jane, daughter of Sarah Lanning, baptised 30 Oct 1844 at St Giles in the Fields, abode Workhouse. Date of birth 18 Oct 1844.

There is a Joanna Lanning death registration Jan-Mar 1850 Clerkenwell district but no age on the death index at that time. Not many Joanna Lannings around though.

Sarah Lanning marries a Stephen Gilmore in 1850 but I haven't managed to find them in 1851 yet to see whether they have any children with them.

Thank you for looking, Kite. I have found this thread: http://www.genealogistsforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=15067&highlight=lanning

which indicates that yes Sarah's daughter was Joanna Jane:o but Sarah has vanished by 1851. The Joanna may be the death in Clerkenwell, but that then means two illegitimate grandchildren born within two months. George Lanning and his second wife have Jane M Lanning b 1844 living with them on a subsequent census.

Timeline, for future reference:

30 October 1844 Joanna Jane Lanning bp at St Giles in the Fields, b 18 October 1844 in the Workhouse, mother Sarah.
No birth registered at this time

March qtr 1850 Clerkenwell death of a Joanna Lanning. More likely to be Barnard Lanning's family in Clerkenwell RD, but no obvious candidate.

31 March 1851 Jane Lanning aged 6, living in Castle Camps, Cambs with "grandmother" Sarah Jeffery.

27 Mar 1853 Jane Mahala Lanning bp Castle Camps Congregational Church. DOB given as 4 Oct 1834, father - Clarke mother - Lanning

1861 - no trace

1871 Jane M Lanning aged 26 b London St Giles with Grandparents George Lanning & Rebecca at 26 Weymouth St Marylebone

1881 Jane Lanning servant aged 37 in Lausanne Rd Camberwell, b Marylebone

1891 Jane Lanning visitor, servant aged 47 servant in Shirland Road Paddington, b London

1901 Jane Lanning servant aged 68 b Paddington at High St St Marylebone

Choice of 2 deaths:
Dec 1903 Marylebone aged 67 or
Jun 1905 Paddington aged 67

Probably the latter - the other is a widowed cook born in Worthing, Norfolk whose age also wobbles, but should be about ten years older than Jane M.

Thank you, Merry! That has got to be her. (If only that Castle Camps baptism didn't exist!)

I ordered the death certificate for Joanna Lanning 1850 and she is 4 years old and father is listed as Nathaniel Lanning.

I would like to think that Jane Mahala Lanning is one and the same and has been rescued from the workhouse by her great grandmother Sarah Jefferies and baptised in 1853. Sarah had lost her daughter Mahala in 1829 so may have changed Janes name in memory of her own daughter???

Sorry, Kangaroo, one and the same as who?

There are a couple of Lannin(g) families headed by a Nathaniel in London in 1851 and 1861.

All the Nathaniel Lannin(g)s appear to be Irish.

Does that death certificate have an address or an occupation for Nathaniel, Kangaroo?

It could be that the Joanna who died was born in Ireland.
