I'm researching the Buttifant family from Suffolk for a friend.

Her Great grandfather is Frederick Buttifant Birth abt 1848 in Corton, Suffolk. I would like to find him in 1851 census, but having no luck, his mother is Sarah who in subsequent census reports is a fisherman's widow. His siblings are

William Buttifant1843
Naomi Buttifant1847
Charles Buttefant1855
Simon George Buttifant1856 – 1929

So I would expect his father to still be around in 1851

There are many spellings of Buttifant!!!!!

I have also been unable to track down a convincing possible marriage for Sarah and a husband or for Frederick and his "wife" Emma, who according to 1911 census should have married about 1875.

All thoughts gratefully received

Sue

Thanks so much for that Elizabeth, brilliant, Butterfin is one of the variants used in another census, and interesting Sarah is Sarah Soanes in another one too!

Gravestonephotos is a new one to me, I've found some relevant transcriptions on Findagrave! I'm off to have a good mooch round.

Thanks

And thanks for the WWI ref too, I was told he had died in the war, but hadn't got to him yet!

There is a James Buttifant marriage Oct-Dec 1845 Yarmouth district, with one of the possible brides being a Sarah Ann Horth.

But on the 1841 there is this family so it looks likely that James and Sarah were married before then:
1841 census (http://interactive.ancestry.co.uk/8978/SFKCHO107_1028_1029-0540/16038007?backurl=http%3a%2f%2fsearch.ancestry.co.u k%2fcgi-bin%2fsse.dll%3frank%3d0%26gsfn%3dja*s%26gsln%3d%2 6sx%3d%26f1%3d%26f2%3dcorton%26f3%3d%26f18%3d%26rg _81004011__date%3d%26rs_81004011__date%3d0%26_8200 4011%3d%26_82004013%3d%26f7%3d%26f20%3d%26f8%3d%26 f9%3d%26gskw%3d%26prox%3d1%26db%3duki1841%26ti%3d5 538%26ti.si%3d0%26gl%3d%26gss%3dmp-uki1841%26gst%3d%26so%3d3&ssrc=&backlabel=ReturnSearchResults)

The 1845 marriage is on FamilySearch: James Buttifant of Fuller's Mill, son of James Buttifant, married Sarah Ann Horth, of Fuller's Mill, daughter of Charles Horth, 24 Nov 1845 St Nicholas, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. The image is also on there and they are bachelor and spinster, both full age. James's occupation Labourer, both fathers Maltsters.

Also there is a Sarah Ann Buttefant baptised 19 Apr 1846 at Yarmouth, daughter of James and Sarah, abode Yarmouth, occupation Malster, so it is definitely not the couple that you are looking for.

Edit - I see Phoenix has found the right marriage while I was doing all that! Well done.

And you've all found all this while I was following up the stuff Elizabeth had given me!, you really all are quite brilliant!

No wonder I hadn't been able to find Frederick on Ancestry in 1851 he had been transcribed as Frederick Buthipa!;(

That explains Sarah's name in 1851 - I thought it was a mistranscription at first, but the image was very clear.

She appears with the name Soanes all over the place, in 1901 she is Sarah Soanes, living next door to Frederick Buttifant (son and family) Further down the road there is a Soanes family, I need to see if I can work out who they are!

Thanks again x

Jas. Cooper Butterfant, of Corton, died very suddenly at sea, about two a.m. of Wednesday, the 2nd instant. He leaves a widow and ten children to mourn their heavy loss.

That fits in nicely with his burial on the 5th!

Hello Sue,

I've attached what we believe is the ancestry of Sarah Soanes Eaves (or Eves). The images are a bit hard to read because of the bizarre image restrictions on the forum (and the fact it converts everything to jpegs, the worst possible format for diagrams/text).

Thomas Soanes is my wife's 6xGreat Grandfather.

Welcome to the forum, James :)

Most members prefer to post a link to their image on their preferred image storage site, such as Photobucket or Flickr as they are less restrictive in their image formats/size etc.

James, FamilySearch has the marriage of William Eaves and Bower Soans listed twice - 15 Dec 1805 and 14 Jan 1806 at Corton, Suffolk. I expect the first date is when the banns were called and the second date is when they actually married.
