Yes, but I've tried every combo I can think of as well as just Susan etc, but no luck.

Maybe James was working and they were travelling...

Thanks Sue. That is interesting. Wonder where his family is hiding. He is a journalist in 1911.

Still looking for Susan and the children in 1901.

I did find the marriage between James Burrows & Susan Southam in Evesham, Worcestershire, Reg Dist in June qtr 1895 6c 529.

Susan was with her siblings and parents Charles & Ellen in 1881 in Church Honeybourne, Gloucestershire.
In 1891 she was a servant in Acocks Green, Warwickshire.

It looks as if he were at 15 Moor St Birmingham in November 1900.

And if that is correct, I wonder if it is a polite way of describing the police station or the cells?

That is from a newspaper report for bankruptcy.

You're probably thinking of when the 1911 census was first released, Libby.

I haven't had any luck with finding them in 1901 anyway.

Thanks. Maybe they were staying with another family while the man of the house was otherwise engaged and ended up under their name.

I've tried searching on first names and place or birth and still couldn't find them.

Here's the bankruptcy petition in the London Gazette, 6 Nov 1900.

Snap ;)

I wondered whether they might be in a workhouse and only enumerated under their initials.

There is a Lily Burrows (aged 4 and born Birmingham) listed in 1901 as a patient in a hospital in Birmingham. They all appear to be children so possibly Birmingham Childrens Hospital - if such a place exists.

Yes, 15 Moor Street does appear to be either the Police Station or the Court House, although I can't actually find #15 on the address search in 1901, but it should be between the two.

Libby, interesting the name Berrows and being a journalist as we have Berrow's Journal here in Worcestershire, wonder if he tried to associate himself with the firm?

This is interesting re Church Honeybourne,

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/GLS/Honeybourne/index.html

Honeybourne is not far from Evesham and not too far from Malvern. If there's anything you need from Worcester parish records let me know.

Sue, yes there still is a Children's Hospital in Birmingham. It's been moved to a new site and the old hospital closed in the last few years.

This reference: RG13 piece 2837 folio 31 page 14 shows that 15 Moor Street (and the surrounding houses) was unoccupied.

btw, you would not be sent to prison for debt in 1900, so I assume he did something illegal which was discovered during the bankruptcy proceedings, and if all the children are his, he was not in prison for very long.

And, he's a journalist "on own account" in 1911. Must have been half educated I suppose. Maybe some sort of white collar crime. They don't seem to get as much jail time....lol

I wonder what he died of? This looks like his death:

Name: BURROWS, James
Registration district: Brentford
County: Middlesex
Year of registration: 1912
Quarter of registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
Age at death:39
Volume no: 3A
Page no: 146

Not sure if you need to go back any further with James, or if you've already done it. I found him with his widowed mother Maria and siblings in Gloucs in 1881; she died in the Evesham RD in 1894.

Thanks Mary.

I'm helping a friend. Very odd story. A friend I've had for many years (over 40) wanted to help her OH do his tree. She asked for help from me. No worries. I get back to his paternal grandmother and find we are related....lol.

We share 4x great grandparents.

This is his maternal line I'm doing with the Burrows, but there's a few mysteries and when I got back to Burrows decided I'd keep going as they are in my paternal line. Haven't connected us that way yet but it would be funny if we are related through both maternal and paternal lines....lol

Bear in mind that Birmingham and Warwickshire PRs, with images, are on Ancestry (two separate databases). There are some parishes missing, however, including part of Coventry and Stratford on Avon.
