I have these two sisters in an Orphanage for Girls, Sister Of Bethany Springbourne, ORPHANAGE FOR GIRLS (SISTERS OF BETHANY) on the 1911 Census.

1911 Census
CHRISTCHURCH, Hampshire
Reference RG14PN5881 RD95 SD2 ED51 SN9999

I want to find their parents as they were both beneficiaries of the will of Eliza Broomfield Emery in 1956. She was the widow of William Augustus Emery. These girls were contemporary with their sons, so probably neices or nephews? Dorothy was 7 and Hilda 6 in 1911.

Eliza Broomfield's son, Frank Chandler Broomfield, was killed on the Royal Oak at Scapa Flow in 1939.

Their birthplace is Southsea Hants on the 1911 census. Your link didn't work for me, by the way.

I saw that, Kate, and couldn't work out what award it was, so thanks for letting me know.

I think we need a list of William Augustus Emery's brothers and sisters, please, Elizabeth.

Parents:
William and Mary Emery

Eliza bapt. 4 June 1820 St John, Portsea
William Augustus Emery bapt. 8 August 1826 St John, Portsea

I haven't found any more baptisms for this couple.

Eliza, born c. 1820, doesn't appear to have married. She is living with her neice Mary Jane Emery, see below, in 1911, and is aged 90!

William Augustus Emery married into my Wood family. He married Helen Charlotte Wood on 4th August 1853 at St Mary's, Portsea. Helen Charlotte was the daughter of my 3x-great-grandparents Newbourn and Jane Wood. Helen and my 2xgreat-grandmother, Fanny Ada, were the only children to survive of this couple.

Children of William Augustus and Helen Charlotte Wood:
Helen Mary born 1854
Fanny Eliza born 1856
Mary Jane born 1858
William Augustus born 1860
Eliza Augusta born 1862
Ada Margaret born 1865

None of the girls married.

I'm struggling to know which part of the Emery family these two girls (Dorothy and Hilda) belong too.

You mentioned William and Eliza's son, Frank, died in 1939 and I see from the 1901/1911 census they had another son, Percival William, 1900-1978, but who were their other two children (1911 shows four born, all living)?

Probably Dorothy and Hilda!

Well, I was trying to be kind and not say that directly!!! :D

I wonder if Percival is mentioned in the will, and if so, how he is described.

A child might be placed in an orphanage even when the parents were alive. Perhaps Eliza was very ill at the time?

Ooheer, Merry, I missed that! I didn't register that there were two other children. Oops, a case of holiday brain.

I was testing your little grey cells.:D;)

It's very odd they were in an orphanage, though. Their father William Augustus died in 1931 and their mother Eliza in 1956.

I wonder if the "orphanage" doubled as a girls' school?

I found this:

"The orphanage and industrial home of the Sisters of Bethany, founded in 1875, has for its object the care, teaching and training for service of children who are orphans, or who, from any other circumstances, have a special claim upon charity: they come from all parts, but the greater number from the poorest localities of the east end of London, and from other large towns; they are received from the age of two and remain till fit for service; the orphanage depends for support upon the private means of the community, the proceeds of the laundry, payments for some of the children, and lastly, upon subscriptions and donations: in connection with the orphanage are day and continuation schools, under government inspection; the Lord Bishop of Manchester is Visitor."

I'm not sure how the Emery family would qualify? Father was a farm bailliff in 1911.

I'll need to add that to my "to do" list for my next NA visit, Merry.
