I'm trying again to find out what happened to my grandfathers brother. He seems to disappear in 1912.

Here goes:

Alfred George Newey, known as George, born 27 November 1876 at 2 Carsington Street, Mayfair, London. His parents Jabez and Philiis Helena were in service there. He moved with his parents to Burton on Trent and is listed on the 1881 and 1891 census at 10 Edward St, Burton. He hasn't been found on the 1901 or 1911 census.
He married in 1907 in Leeds to Edith Eleanor Mack. They split up quite early on but had a child George Edward born in 1907.

1911 Edith and her son were living at 61 St Andrew Street, Hertford, Hertfordshire RG14PN7629 RG78PN374 RD137 SD2 ED9 SN153

I cannot find a death for Edith either.

Alfred George was an entertainer or vocalist. I have various sightings of him via 'The Stage'.

He travelled to the USA in 1912 and returned the same year. he took his son with him and was travelling with a woman described as his wife according to the passenger list.

After returning to this country in 1912 he left his son with foster parents in Ludlow, Shropshire but they ill treated him and he was brought up in a childrens home. This information is from George Edward's son my second cousin.

Alfred George never returned for his son and according to my second cousin his father never believed that his father had deserted him.

I wonder if when he did return George Edward had been sent to the childrens home and he couldn't locate him.

I have posted about this in the past but can't find the original thread.

So much new info is online now that I thought I'd try again.

My second cousin would love to find out what happened to his grandfather and his grandmother for that matter as her death is a mystery too.

Just to add that 'The Stage' does list a Sgt Newey a baritone playing at The Grand in Filey, Yorkshire on 26 February 1914. No evidence if is the same person as we don't believe he was in the army.

On the Winifredian in 1912 Liverpool to Boston are Mr Newey, Mrs Newey and Miss M Newey. Miss M Newey over 12 years old. All are stated to be citizens of the United States. They are the only Neweys I can see on that sailing (looking at the UK Outward Passenger List), so is that right?

Where have I got that from then? I know on the return journey Alfred George in mistranscribed, his son is correctly listed.

On the Caledonian arriving in Glasgow 27 Oct 1912 from New York, are British passengers George Newey, engineer, 35, and George Newey 4, country of last permanent residence USA, intended future residence "foreign countries".

So are you sure that's them, Marg?

I can't find my print out of the passenger lists for the journeys.

I was sure about them when I found them.

Can you send me links Kate to what you've found please?

Just remembered that my second cousin told me that his father said there was a lady travelling with them and she wasn't his mother.

George Edward, the son, had a distinguished career in the navy, I've found him on passenger lists and eventually was awarded the OBE for his services during WW2. He may have somehow been abandoned by his parents and then ill treated and brought up in a children's home but he came out of all that very well.

There is a Sarah Jones at 41 Stafford Street in the 1911 census.

No idea at all. Possibly a landlady? He would have lead an itinerant life moving from music hall to music hall all over the country I suppose.

Doesn't look like Sarah Jones is a relative - looked at 2 marriages in Liverpool of Richard Jones and Sarah - wasn't a Newey.

Mine and my second cousins (Bob) gut feeling is that he went back to the USA.

Bob checked all the the death indexes in those large books many years ago and I've checked online. He's not there, so unless he died as a 'John Doe', he died overseas. My mum always said he went to America, yes we know he went and came back but did he go back?

There is a 69-year-old George Newey sailing from London to New Zealand in 1946. Under occupation, it says that he is retired.

I've just written and about to post a letter to my eldest cousin, all aunts and uncles have passed away, to ask what she remembers. I have asked her to ask another cousin her age who I know she is in contact with and I'm not to ask him. I could phone her but I want her to think before she replies.

I also know that I'll be on the phone at least an hour if she does phone me back.

There has been a George Newey here in NZ on the electoral rolls since 1880. But probably more than one man!

1940s he is a manufacturer.

There is one born here in 1877, he died 1954 age 78, which is quite possibly the passenger.

Yes a very long call. She called me last night but as I have her number programmed into my phone and I was about to start our evening meal I ignored it.

She droned about about all and sundry, stuff she's told me before. I had to keep trying to steer the conversation back to what I wanted to talk about. I also have to wait until she takes a breath which seems to be rarely.
