Census returns are a bit thin on the ground for this chap, born in Berwick on Tweed c1845 and until a recent thread I hadn't got a clue he went to Canada, post 1870 I'm totally clueless about him.

There are a few possibles in Canada with ages not quite right, but not enough information to know which is him.

In 1841, his father was in Lowestoft.

George Hay, 37, coast guard
Ann Hay, 30
Elizabeth Goulson, 15

None of them were born in county.

Most of the coast guards that I've researched served in the Royal Navy prior to their service with the coast guard.

The Elizabeth in the '41 is the Elizabeth aged 47 in the 1870 Canada return, George jnr is the one I have lost track of and until my recent thread killing of Elizabeth I had no idea he went overseas.

The only child mentioned in his father's will (1880) is the youngest daughter who came along in the 1860's. The ADM records have quite a bit of info which Phoenix found long ago and detail his father's days as a mariner and appointment to the Coastguard Service.

This might be him in 1881.

Bracebridge and McCaulay, Ontario

George Hay, 31
Catharein Hay, 28
Caroline Gardiner, 51

I reckon it is him because, although he says that he was born in England, he gives his ethnic origin as 'Scotch'. In the previous Canadian census, his ethnicity is recorded as 'Scottish'.

George Hay was a sailor in the 1871 Canadian census, yet the one in the link is a farmer. Could have left the navy/merchant marine, though.

EDIT - That isn't him. Found the marriage between George and Catherine Gardiner and it's the wrong parents for George and wrong birthplace.

I'm thinking that as George was a sailor, he may be at sea.

Mmm, well dad and a brother were both sailors and as he was born at Berwick the options were either farming, sailor, ship builder and working in the chemical factory.
