View Full Version : The children of Edward Eley and Lucy
Edward was bp 11 November 1821 in Hambledon, Hants
Elizabeth was bp 9 June 1824 in Petersfield, Hants but the family was already of Whitechapel Row in London.
Robert was born in St Pancras c 1828.
Can anyone see what happened to Edward and Elizabeth? Or even what happened to Lucy? I though she died before 1861, but I can't spot her death.
I assume they all remained in London.
I'm not sure where it gets me, but a Charles King Eley, son of John Edward Eley is born 1861.
An Elizabeth Eley has a possible spouse of Charles King. Off to find John in 1841.
They are all together in 1841 so everyone should be on civil registration records. There's a possible for Edward jr dying in 1870, but at first glance that man was born in London (1851 census), so more checking needed!
Elizabeth Eley dau of Edward, house decorator, married 27th Feb 1851 to Stephen Raggett, ginger beer maker, son of Stephen Raggett, farmer, at St John's Clerkenwell. Witnesses George and Sarah Cooper.
Ooh! But in which case, where is she in 1851?
Stephen Raggett head m 39 coal dealer and ginger beer maker b Herts Redbourn
Elizabeth Raggett wife m 27 b Hants, Southampton
Living at 64 Collier St, Clerkenwell
Baggett!
Thank you, Merry.
Have you got Edward sr, Lucy and Robert together in 1851?
This looks most likely to be Edward sr's death:
Name: Edward Eley
Date of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec 1851
Registration District: Pancras
Inferred County: London
Volume: 1
Page: 311
Robert seems to have married Ellen Matthews in 1852, but he has a middle name, Thomas. Did he have that before?
Sorry. just hunting down a Raggee (Why are unusual names just as difficult?)
Yes, I'd found the family in 1851 and agree that death is probably the correct one.
Lucy's father was a Thomas, so that would be feasible. I've never found a baptism for him, so he may well always have had a middle name.
Oh, that must be right, because a witness is S Raggett!
Nov 21st 1852 St Pancras Chapel, painter, son of Edward dec'd. Elllen dau of Thomas Matthews dec'd. Other witness Anne Julia Gapp (or Goss or similar), her mark.
That is one impressive wedding: disposes of father and introduces bil!
This ought to be the elder son, but he's not wanting to be found on the census:
Name: Edward Eley
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1822
Date of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep 1870
Age at Death: 48
Registration District: Pancras
Inferred County: London
Volume: 1b
Page: 93
And I've killed Elizabeth off, because Stephen has a younger model in 1871.
This is probably him:
Name: Edward Eley
Spouse's Name: Caroline Baker
Event Date: 15 May 1842
Event Place: Saint Martin In The Fields, Westminster, London
as there's an Edward and Caroline with a load of children on the 1861. He says b 1820 Hampshire and is an engineer. Living at 216 City Road, St Luke's.
This ought to be the elder son, but he's not wanting to be found on the census:
Name: Edward Eley
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1822
Date of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep 1870
Age at Death: 48
Registration District: Pancras
Inferred County: London

Hmmmmm Edward (Caroline's OH) is still alive in 1871!!
Maybe this is him?

Caroline is a widow in 1881.
Elers!
Thank you, Merry. No way would I have found them by myself.
lol Phoenix! Which site are you using? I didn't find anything that wasn't spelled correctly!
what happened to Lucy? I though she died before 1861, but I can't spot her death.
There are a few possibles spelled Ely and Eely.
