Last member of a generation that I have yet to put an end too, Elizabeth Goulson bapt 1823, Knipton, Leics, last known info is from the 1861

1861 census

William Atkinson, head, 42, millwright, born Lincoln
Elizabeth Atkinson, wife, 44, born Knipton, Leics.

living at 13 King Street, Newark.

Could she be the Elizabeth who died in Newark 1903 aged 81?

kiterunner
09-10-13, 22:34
In 1871 they are at 4 King Street, Newark:
William Atkinson Head Mar 49 Mill Wright Lincolnshire Lincoln
Elizabeth Do Wife Mar 50 General Servant Leicestershire Leicester.

kiterunner
09-10-13, 22:42
And in 1891 this looks like her at 40 Village Street, Woolsthorpe, Lincs:
Martha A Griffith Head Wid 65 Sub Postmistress Woolsthorpe Lincolnshire
Frances A Poole Granddaur S 19 Pupil Teacher Nurserabad Bombay India
Elizabeth Atkinson Cousin Wid 75 Knipton Leicestershire

So this could be her death:

Woolsthorpe would certainly tie in with the family, age on that death ref is a bit out but by then I think the family had pretty much cleared out of the area and I don't believe she had any children.

No idea who Martha the cousin is though, it's not a name that appears on that side of the family.

kiterunner

FreeREG has the burial - Elizabeth Atkinson buried 16 Jul 1898 St James, Woolsthorpe, Lincolnshire, age 83, abode Woolsthorpe.

No idea who Martha the cousin is though, it's not a name that appears on that side of the family.

There is a Mary A Griffiths, widow, age 74, in Woolsthorpe in 1901, probably the same person as Martha.

And in 1881 at 11 Queen Street, Newark:
John Griffiths Head Mar 53 Labourer General Pembrokes Lydslip Penally(?)
Martha Ann Wife " 53 Lincolns Woolsthorpe
Frances Adelaide Poole Granddaur 9 Scholar Nusenabad East Indies

kiterunner

The granddaughter is on FamilySearch slightly mistranscribed:
Francis Adalisle Poole, born 10 Jan 1872, baptised 21 Jan 1872, Nusseerabad, Bombay, India, parents Charles and Sarah Anne.

Merry

I got stuck with Martha going back. There's a Martha Ann Dodson born right place and time, but she married someone called Horse-something, though I couldn't see a death for her. I hadn't tried to work in Charles and Sarah Ann Poole though.

kiterunner

Hmm, then there is a marriage for a Martha Ann Horsewood in Sheffield in 1863 but not to a John Griffith(s).
Edit - it is on FamilySearch and she married Thomas Robinson, but it doesn't give her father's name to check whether it is the same Martha.

Martha Ann Horsewood has a daughter Sarah Ann age 8 on the 1861 census.

Do you think this is John Griffiths death?

kiterunner

Sorry, I didn't think that remarriage was very likely but I posted it up so I didn't forget it as I had to go out shopping too! Back now.

And yes, that death looks likely for John, so we can forget about that marriage.

kiterunner
10-10-13, 10:17
Oh - FamilySearch has their marriage!

John Griffiths, son of William Griffiths, married Martha Ann Robinson, daughter of William Dodson, 27 Jun 1872 Cawnpore, Bengal, India!

kiterunner
10-10-13, 10:19
So I suppose now we just need to work out how Martha Dodson and Elizabeth Atkinson are cousins to see whether it was the right Elizabeth or if this has all been one big red herring.

kiterunner
10-10-13, 10:22
FamilySearch has the baptism of Martha Ann Dodson 6 Jan 1828 Woolsthorpe, parents William and Mary. Also the baptism of Sarah Ann Dodson 30 Dec 1852 Woolsthorpe, mother Martha Ann Dodson.

kiterunner
10-10-13, 11:30
Looking at the 1881 census, there is a William Atkinson, age 60, married, millwright, born Lincoln, patient at Devonshire Hospital, Buxton, Derbyshire. I still can't find Elizabeth in 1881.

Merry
10-10-13, 11:36
Just got in, but I'm going to have to read that again! lol Time to eat first, but I may not get back until later.

So at the start when Glen said:

Elizabeth Goulson bapt 1823, Knipton, Leics

did he have the wrong person?

kiterunner
10-10-13, 12:26
Well spotted, Merry. I was going to check that end of it next.

kiterunner
10-10-13, 12:29
There is an Elizabeth Goulson in Lincoln on the 1851 census, 27, unmarried, born Belvoir Leicestershire, sister of Valentine Goulson age 32. Is that your Elizabeth, Glen? (FamilySearch has baptisms for both Valentine and Elizabeth at Knipton with the same parents, so I reckon it is.)

kiterunner
10-10-13, 12:34
There is an Elizabeth Goulson marriage in 1852, Newark district. But I'm not sure who she married yet - either George Ellis or Thomas Wilde Hunt, according to FreeBMD.
And another one in 1854, Newark district, possible spouses David John Cox or Henry Wileman / Willman.

Merry
10-10-13, 12:40
I googled Thomas Wilde Hunt (turns out he isn't the groom!) and found a thread from last year on another site where Glen was researching this.

Merry
10-10-13, 12:42
Glen must have forgotten the wrong path had been taken.

kiterunner
10-10-13, 12:51
A "wilde hunt" indeed!

kiterunner
10-10-13, 12:55
So, having read through that old thread, we need to find Robert Atkinson and Elizabeth Ellis who married 4 Feb 1859 at Newark to see if that's the right Elizabeth.

Merry
10-10-13, 14:38
I am helping dau build a papier-mache and and cardboard version of the Bishop Rock lighthouse (by tomorrow lol) so I'll have a look at that later!!

Merry
10-10-13, 17:11
This looks like that couple:

1861 census, Westborough, Lincs

Robert Atkinson head m 40 publican and ag lab b Westborough, Lincolnshire
Elizabeth Atkinson wife m 39 b ditto
Emma Isaac niece 5 b Notts

Merry
10-10-13, 17:13
She's the right age. Westborough is 8 miles from Knipton.

Merry
10-10-13, 17:20
They do seem very determined to have been born in Westborough (1871, 1881, 1891 census records and 1901 for Elizabeth)

kiterunner
10-10-13, 17:24
Yes, I thought that was probably them too.

Merry
10-10-13, 19:05
Oh, looks like they emigrated and George and Elizabeth Ellis had a daughter Fannie in about 1864:

Is this the same Elizabeth in 1901?
Niagara, Ontario
Ellis Joseph Head S born 1 Jul 1856 age 44 born Ontario
Ellis Elizabeth Mother W born 28 Jul 1823 age 77 born England.

If it is, then the son being called Joseph, and the date of Elizabeth's birth, fit well with her father being Joseph and her baptism 23 Aug 1823.

Yes, found them in 1871 now and Joseph is part of the family:
Stamford, Ontario

There is a possible death on ancestry at Welland, Ontario:
Elizabeth Ellis died 16 Apr 1908 age 84, residence township of Stamford, widow, born England, informant William Ellis. Religious denomination Methodist, which matches the Elizabeth on the 1901 census though the family had various different religions on the 1871 census.

Well done that looks extremely likely!

This marriage:

m. Ellis, George

Newark, Nottinghamshire

....is right, but is followed by the family moving to Ontario, Canada. The Atkinson records are different people.

Glen TK
13-10-13, 11:49
So she went to Canada? No wonder I haven't been able to finish her off and wrap that generation up with a set of birth/death dates.

Merry
13-10-13, 11:53
Yep, just look at the last few posts on this thread!

Glen TK
13-10-13, 12:21
Just got them, for some reason I was only showing 3 pages of replies??

Great research and thanks both of you for tracking her down. The Methodist reference looks very likely as many of the family were strongly connected to the movement and reported as such in English and overseas newspapers.

Could George Hay be the George Hay b 1845 Berwick, son of George Hay (coastguard) and Ann Goulson, (sister of Elizabeth)????

Glen TK
13-10-13, 12:38
OOOOOHHHHH :d

George Hay appears in the 1851 at Berwick, by 1861 his mother had died and dad had remarried, no sign of young George in the 1861 so it looks like it could well be him.

Phoenix
13-10-13, 12:57
Oh. wow! Not good on the Goulsons, but I do remember George Hay;)

Glen TK
13-10-13, 13:11
Yes this one is the son of the coastguard.

In 1841 Elizabeth Goulson appears with coastguard George in Yarmouth, by 1851 George was in Berwick, it seems that despite being way up north in 1851 that they remained in touch with family in Lincs and of course he had another son (Joseph the mariner), who retired to Lincoln.

Now what happened to George jnr in Canada me wonders?
