I had deleted this thread because I thought it was the wrong family, but have just found a DNA match which confirms it is the right one.

The baptism of Luke and Lucy's first child (that I know of) says "On this 11th August 1793 baptized John lawful (as it seems from a copy of the marriage certificate) male child of Luke Hally Corporal in Capt Rosse's Light Company 71 Regt and of Lucy De Costa, born 29th June last.
Sponsors: William Cameron Sergt in Captain Rosse's Coy above Regt. Luis McKensy Catharina Cameron wife of No 1 only present. "

If only I could see that marriage certificate!

I hope the copy wasn't a forgery!

Lol, Merry.

I remember hearing on TV that when Portuguese missionaries converted Indians to Christianity, they gave them Portuguese names. So I wonder if Lucy was from such a family. My Dad has a little bit of South Asian and Indian DNA in his ethnicity estimate which I should think is likely to come from Lucy.

I had forgotten about that (Indians given Portuguese names) - yes, sounds very likely in this case.
