Does anyone know when photographs were put on Royal Navy ID cards? or if there were any photo's on service documents c WW2?

Am trying to get a photo of someone who was in the Royal Navy until 1945.

Awaiting service docs which will give ships he served on and hopefully a photo. If not it's possible he served with someone who might have a photo of him.

I don't know the answer, but according to the National Maritime Museum's website: "Before 1972 all Royal Navy personnel were given their records when they left the service. The surviving records until that date only contain basic services details and lists of postings."

So it sounds as though if there was a photo, it would have been given to him.

Thanks Kite.

Just clutching at straws.

Friend wants photo of her father who died when she was small but no-one seems to have one.

Have sent for RN records and they've replied giving a timescale of 30 working days ie 6 weeks. They also gave his service number but without the Depot prefix so until it comes won't know where he joined up.

At least it's not too long to wait unlike the Army - is it still 18 months?

I do know he was taken off his ship to hospital in Sydney in 1945 but doubt whether there were any photos in the newspapers in those days, even if it was reported due to wartime security.
