Great grandfather Marsh scarcely know his mother as she died when he was very small. He was effecttively brought up by stepmother Rebecca Rumble.

She is in Lord Street, St Pauls, Portsea in 1851: HO107 piece 1659 folio 739 page 36

There she is a bosun's wife, with Mary Ann, 2, and William, 1. By 1871, she has married Daniel Marsh and two sons are still at home: Robert aged 13 and Henry C aged 15.

Henry C is probably Charles Henry Rumble, bp 1856 at St Marys Portsea, Hants.

Rebecca must be somewhere in 1861 with at least those youngest two boys, but I can't see this little family anywhere. It's probably in the Pauls Ward in Portsea, but that doesn't help much.

Not found them yet, but I did find Charles Henry Rumble's christening on the IGI:
Charles Henry Rumble 3 Feb 1856 St Marys, Portsea, parents William and Rebecca (extracted record).
Robert is listed on the IGI as Robert Romble, baptised 1 Aug 1858, same church, and there is also George Edward Rumble 8 Jan 1854, Sarah Rumbell 11 Apr 1852 and William Rumble 12 May 1850.

Thank you, Kite!

She could have up to six children with her. For all I know, William her first husband was still alive.

Trouble is, she may have been shacking up with someone and letting herself &
children take lover's name.

Just checked the census on FMP as well. Nothing.

I've looked for children with mother Reb* (and Rab*), women born Middx c 1823 living in Portsea and just nothing. Unless they are right out of area, they just aren't showing.

Thanks for looking, Margaret!

(I even tried initials, in case they were in a workhouse!)
