Family History Photos, female ancestors, 2xg or more

Each month we will be asking members to post up family history photographs from a particular category. This month we are looking for photographs of your great-great-grandmothers (and the great-great-grandmothers of your partner and any step or adopted great-great-grandmothers etc!) and also any other female ancestors from earlier generations!

Photos posted on this thread will eventually be added to our 'Decades of Family History Photographs' forum in order to help others with dating old photographs. (You are welcome to post any photos you like directly to the Decades forum at any time; these monthly requests are just further encouragement!)

Please note that this thread is on an open forum so any captions to your photos may be picked up by Google searches. If you are lucky you may make a family history contact through your post! I made my best family history contact ever through a photograph caption posted on this site!

There is no restriction to the number of photographs you post each month - the more the merrier! However, please make separate posts if your photos are from different decades. Remember to caption your photograph and if you know the date or approximate date, please state that also. If you are unsure, then that is something we can discuss on the thread.

You will need to use Photobucket or a similar site to host your pictures. If possible please scan your photos at between 300 and 600dpi - if you need help with uploading your images see here:

My OH's GG grandmother Emma Seldon (nee Spear) 1836 - 1929. Taken in 1912.

Priscilla Isabella Wallace Williamson (1864-1931), my great-great grandmother.

Priscilla had two illegitimate children and then went on to marry three times becoming, in turn, Priscilla Paton, Priscilla Falconer and Priscilla Keddie. She once worked in coal mining as a pit head lassie. I'm curious about the sash she is wearing in the photograph.

I'm not sure when the photo was taken.

This is my g-g-grandmother, Mary Buck nee Smith. She was a Quaker, born in Witney, Oxon in 1827. She lived most of her married life in Adderbury, Oxon where by the time of her death she was the only worshipper at the local Quaker Meeting House. Mary died in 1914 at Adderbury. She always wore traditional Quaker dress, but this didn't stop her climbing ladders to inspect the building work on her property in the 1890s at which point she was described as a mad old woman by the locals! (she definitely wasn't!!)

I think this photo was taken about the time of her marriage in 1858.

This is another of my 2xg-grandmothers, Elizabeth Clark nee Sainsbury (no relation to the grocers!). Elizabeth was born in 1826 at Bratton in Wiltshire. She married George Clark in Bath in 1849. Elizabeth was considered by the family to be an expert seamstress, much to the irritation of her daughter-in-law who considered she should be the expert! Elizabeth died in 1914 in Bristol, where she had spent most of her married life.

This photo was taken about 1905. Elizabeth is the image of my aunt (her great-granddaughter, who was always told she looked like no one in the family) and they share the same birthday - 18th Dec.

I'm not sure this counts as isn't a photograph!

This is my 3xg-grandmother, Rebecca Maynard nee Moule. Rebecca was born in 1774 in Orwell, Cambridgeshire. In about 1800 she was invited to go and live with her aunt Sarah at Whittlesford, Cambs, as Sarah was ill and needed help to run her home.

Sarah had a tough life as even before their marriage her husband had wanted out of the relationship (he was 14 years her junior), but was afraid of being sued for breach of promise and so they had married despite his reservations. Her husband had two unsuccessful businesses and was declared bankrupt. He and Sarah had two children but both died before they reached adulthood. Sarah's husband wanted to emigrate to America but Sarah refused to allow this. Her husband eventually accepted they would never leave England and, having pad off his creditors in full, went into business as a farmer and this time the business looked like it would be a success. Unfortunately for Sarah it was then that she became ill and asked her niece for help.

Rebecca moved in, but things must have continued to be difficult for Sarah as Rebecca began a relationship with her aunt's husband. She bore him a son in October 1802 and they all lived together at the farm. In May 1803 Sarah died and was buried 15 miles away at Fen Stanton, where her children had been buried.

With rather indecent haste and ignoring rules about marrying your dead wife's niece, the new widower, David Maynard and the young Rebecca (she was 40 years younger than his first wife) travelled to London where they were married in October 1803. They then returned to Whittlesford where they had two more sons (the first of whom was my g-g-grandfather) and built up the farm to be an important business in the area.

Rebecca was widowed in 1821 and continued to run the farm until it was taken over by her youngest son. She died at Whittlesford in 1853 and was buried there with her late husband.

I really don't know when the image of Rebecca was made, but probably after the death of her husband, given we don't have one of him.

I don't know who this lady is. The photograph was found amongst other belonging to my paternal grandparents.

I am guessing who this is, it was also found in the collection of photographs belonging to my paternal grandparents. I would like to think that the old lady was my 3 x great grandmother Ann Yates nee Tomlinson 1801-1886.
I believe the younger woman was her daughter Emma who had three illegitimate sons, Thomas, John and Effingham. The man would then be Emma's brother Benjamin who never married.

No nothing at all Shona. I should have added that probably the photo was taken post 1905 as she looks to be in mourning dress and that's when she was widowed.

I reckon it's a photo of her husband. I posted a wedding group in the last lot of pics taken 1903. Hubby was on that. White mutton chop whiskers.

I don't have the originals, my aunt does. I struggled to get her to lend them to me to scan.
