Nothing to add to BK6 from this thread

The results of census searches on FMP state "Searching within: Households, Institutions, Vessels"

How do I go about searching just one of these three categories?

Or can't I?

If you can, I've not found a way.

I managed it - I've done it before for my grandfather and great-grandfather.

Go to a census, e.g. 1891.
Go to advanced search. Scroll down.
For me the three boxes "households, institutions, vessels" come up ticked.
Untick the ones you don't need.

I tried with the name Purkis and got two hits for vessels, one at Weymouth and one at Medway.

Oooh, lol Elizabeth! My eyes just bypassed anything that wasn't a box to fill in! When I read your reply I thought, "I know I've never seen three tick boxes", but they were there, none the less!!

Thanks very much! :)

I can't see that option on the 1871 census though :( (the one I need)

No, it's not there.
I have got round that one with naval bods by clicking on "British ships in ports", but it won't work for institutions.

Edit: not that I can get any hits!

For 1861, 1871 and 1881 you can chose Ships and Overseas Establishments in the country menu.

Thanks for the tip - it does work. Brilliant. However, I can only make it work if I select a specific census first. Can't do it if I enter a name first.

Merry - do not jest! I'm off to Specsavers. Took some prawns out of the freezer earlier to defrost. Prawns? Nah! Served up lobster bisque topped with...carrots.

Thanks for the tips Elizabeth.
