I live near Corley, would you like photographs of anywhere in particular?

Can I ask where you got those early Australian military records from? Is there anything online?

Hi Mary

The information on Reuben's military career came from two sources (other than family legend)

1. "The Royal Australian Engineers, 1902-1919, making and breaking" book by Ronald McNicol published 1960s. The State Library of NSW has a copy which I consulted.

2. I wrote to Col Neil C Smith, AM, "Mostly unsung military history" who provided quite a bit of detail freely. (email to [email protected])

Also I was able to look at the pay records for Victoria Barracks Sydney, at the National Archives Sydney Office, which gave is rate of pay and dates of promotion etc. It was very interesting.

Gwynne,

Reuben's wife's family, the Nightingales, lived in Corley for a long period. Richard was a carpenter and in 1861 her brother Thomas and mother Susannah and various other family members lived in Savage Lane. I don't have any more accurate addresses from the census, but I do wonder if there are any headstones at the churchyard. Susannah's father Edward CHESLIN was the monumental mason in nearby Allesley and many headstones there (including his own) are his work.

Oooh, isn't that a bit creepy? I hope he didn't manage to carve his own date of death?!!

I'm not sure if the graveyard is mapped and indexed, do you know if it is? If you could narrow down the search area I'd be happy to have a look for you.
