John McLean married Catherine Carnegie in 1855 - his second marriage. On the marriage record, he states that he had 10 children with his first wife, Isabella McIntyre - five still alive. Isabella died in 1852. Checking my notes, I have identified nine children Can any one track down the missing child, please?

From my notes, these are the nine children from the marriage with Isabella McIntyre. John and Isabella married in 1827.

1 Neil McLean, b 1827, Killean parish (died 1895)
2 Janet McLean, b 1829, Killean parish (died 1885)
3 John McLean, b 1832, Campbeltown
4 Alexander McLean, b 1834, Campbeltown (died 1897)
5 Malcolm McLean, b 1837, Campbeltown (died 1921)
6 Catherine McLean, b 1842, Campbeltown
7 Isabella McLean, b 1844, Campbeltown (died before 1852)
8 Marion McLean, b 1848, Campbeltown
9 Isabella McLean, b 1852, Campbeltown

Children from the second marriage with Catherine Carnegie - all born in Campbeltown:

1 James McLean, b 1855 (died 1859)
2 Elizabeth Morrison McLean, b 1857
3 Elizabeth Morrison McLean, b 1859
4 Margaret Docherty McLean, b 1860
5 Catherine McLean, b 1861 (died 1865)
6 John McLean, b 1863
7 Catherine Scott McLean, b 1865

I thought this was the missing child:

1851 Saddell Street, Campbeltown

Dugald McIntyre, head, 60, shoemaker, b Killean
Sarah McDonald, wife, 60, b Gigha
Sarah McIntyre, dau, 23, dressmaker, b Campbeltown
Eugenia McLean, visitor, 20, servant, b Killean

But, Eugenia appears to be the daughter of Malcolm and Margaret McLean:

1841 Barr, Killean

Malcolm McLean, 45
Margaret McLean, 45
Lauchlan McLean, 15
Mary McLean, 15
Mary McLean, 14,
Charlotte McLean, 12
Eugenia McLean, 10
Margaret McLean, 7

As Eugenia is with Dugald McIntyre in 1851 and John McLean's first wife was a McIntyre, there may be a connection - perhaps Dugald was Isabella's brother.

Have you been able to establish whether John, Catherine, Marion or Isabella (from the first marriage) were alive in 1855? Just trying to work out if we are looking for a child who survived, or a child who died before the second marriage.

The following is from a public tree on Ancestry:

John McLean, b 1832, d 1841
Marion McLean, b 1848, d 1851

However, there is a John McLean on the 1871 and 1881 census records, born at the right time in Campbeltown. In 1871, he is on a vessel in Girvan.

1881 Quay head, Campbeltown

John McLean, head, 50, seaman, b Campbeltown
Jane McLean, wife, 42, b Campbeltown
Andrew Spiers, stepson, 15, app tin smith, b Campbeltown
Isabella Galbraith, sister in law, 28, net weaver, b Campbeltown
John Galbraith, nephew, 4, b Campbeltown

Neil, Alexander and Malcolm were all fishermen, so John, the seaman (above), may be their brother.

This is the McLean family in 1841 in Campbeltown (father, John, is in prison):

Isabella McLean, 30, labourer's wife
Neil McLean, 13
Janet McLean, 12
John McLean, 8
Alexander McLean, 6
Malcolm McLean, 4
Marion McCallum, 65
Daniel Loynachan, 6 months

I had wondered if Daniel was the 'missing child', but his parents were Neil Loynachan and Catherine McKinnon. In 1851, he is with his grandmother, Mary McAlester, a Campbeltown lodging house keeper.

1851

John, head, 42, labourer, b Killean
Isabella, wife, 42, b Campbeltown
Alexr, son, 16, fisherman, b Campbeltown
Malcolm, son, 12, fisher boy, b Campbeltown
Marion, dau, 3, b Campbeltown
