Walter is with his parents in Portsea, Hants.

Born Dorset, aged 5 (though a stroke after the 5)

This is not him: Deaths Dec 1884 (>99%)
HAWKINS Walter Henry 25 Portsea 2b 274

I note that there is this birth:

Births Jun 1856 (>99%)

There is an Ancestry Tree for the family of Walter Frederick Hamilton Hutchings.

He is an optician and a traveller.
Born 1830 in Somerset.
Marries 1852 in Worcester.
First known child Walter Frederick Hamilton Hutchings b 1854 in Southwark
Next known child b 1858 Birmingham, where the rest of the family were born.

But... I can't find the family in 1861.

Brilliant! Thank you, Kite. I had hoped there might be a clue as to where they were mid 1850s, but Dad is safely at home.
