Good Afternoon,

I have been trying to find my great grandfather's sister Gertrude Jones after she married.

She was born in Sheffield on the 27th January 1870 to William Jones & Mary Buxton. She is with her parents on the 71/81/91 censuses.

She marries a man named Thomas Henry Carr in Sheffield on the 28th October 1891. (marriage transcript on FMP).

I cannot locate her at all after this marriage. I don't know If I am just being blind and missing her on the 1901 and 1911 censuses, or if Thomas/her died, or they went abroad.

Would anyone be able to have a look and see if you can find what I can't. Many thanks in advance.

There is this Gertrude Carr in 1901, but the age is out.
She is a visitor and perhaps they didn't know her true age.
She was born in Sheffield and given an age of 27.

1901 Census
CARR, Gertrude
ASHBY DE LA ZOUCH, Leicestershire
RG13 piece 2971 folio 16 page 24
She is a visitor and housewife at the Cottage Hospital at Ashby de la Zouch.

FamilySearch has the baptism for the girl on the 1911 census entry and gives her name as Gertrude Ladas Carr. But it doesn't give mother's maiden name.

Wait - just realised that George's birth should be on Scotland's People and would give MMN - off to search...

Yes, Scotland's People has a birth for George Carr, 1907, county Stirling, district Falkirk, but you would have to use credits to view it to see the mother's maiden name.

Ah, Thomas Henry Carr's service record is on FMP and has the marriage to Gertrude Jones in Sheffield, plus births of two children - Gertrude Ladas in Colaba, and Thos William born 19 Nov 1893 in Clonmel (Ireland). So that is definitely the right family in 1911.

Her husband is the one from Liverpool living in the Sheffield area in 1891 yob 1872. She is listed on his army record (FMP). They married 28th Oct 1891 at St Phillip's Sheffield.

Two children born, Thomas William 19th Nov 1893 and Gertrude Ladas (?sp) 17th July 1897. First born at Cloumel and second at Colaba.

Colaba is in India. Not sure about Cloumel - I expect I've spelled it wrong!!

Thank you so much :)

I just checked my Scotlands People account and had 6 credits left so i've managed to get that certificate. It is the right Gertrude, though they've given a completely wrong date for their marriage.

I really appreciate the time you've spent looking for her.

Gertrude Carr Wife 38 Married 19 yrs 11 ch, 4 living, 7 died, Notts Worksop

7 children out of 11 had died.
That is so sad.

I think we have our work cut out trying to find them all.

It is really sad but not the most tragic in my family. There is a lady in my tree who had, had 21 children born alive but 16 had died by the time of the 1911 census. She was only 52 at the time of that census :(

I couldn't understand why Worksop was given as Gertrude's place of birth on this census but then I remembered, on the 1871 census, Gertrude's father William Jones was boardering in Worksop! He was a journeyman painter and I had always assumed he had gone there alone for work whilst his wife stayed in Sheffield with the children. Now I am wondering if the wife went with him for a while and Gertrude was born there.

Her birth seems to have been registered in Sheffield district, so she won't have been born in Worksop.

Thanks Kite. I always believed she was born in Sheffield. All previous census with her parents stated she was born in Sheffield. Just a strange coincidence that Worksop is given on the 1911 when her father was in Worksop around the time she was born.

Hi again,

I've been trying to locate the family again on the 1901 census as Thomas' records indicate he left the army in 1898.

I've found a family that I am pretty sure is them but wanted opinions.
Source Citation: Class: RG13; Piece: 4766; Folio: 45; Page: 30.

Not sure if I have linked correctly but if not, its a Thomas Carr aged 28 in Westgate, Northumberland. His wife is named as Ethel (should be Gertrude) and her age wrongly given as 27. But the children almost match in info. Eldest child Thomas down as just William but Ireland matches for birthplace. Then the next two children seem to be in the wrong order. There is a John aged 3 born India that should be Gertrude Ladas. But then the next child is Gertrude aged 4m born Sheffield that I think should be John.

Would you say this is the right family or two many discrepancies?

Yes, looks likely to be them.
