This link should take you to the transcription of the 1881 census entry on FamilySearch (surname is transcribed as Hairges) and it has a link through to the image on Findmypast but you would have to buy credits on FMP to view the image if you haven't got any credits left:

I can't find any trace of his army record at the moment but I'm not sure whether we should be looking for it on ancestry or Findmypast, as ancestry has the WW1 records and FMP the pre-WW1s. Do you know the dates of when he served, Zoe, and anything else such as his rank, regimental number, medals he received, etc?

Okay, found the entry. For some reason it doesn't come up on a global search of ancestry (Oh, but it doesn't show his age so maybe not the right record?).

UK Military Campaign Medal and Award Rolls 1793-1949
Regimental Number 4882, rank Private, name HAIRYES J, King's Own Scottish Borderers,
whether already in possession of India Medal 1895 - no, entitled to medal - yes
Entitled to clasps: Punjab Frontier 1897-1898 yes, Malakand 1897 - no, Samana 1897 - no, Tirah 1897-8 - yes

Ah, looking at the army service records on findmypast, no 4882 in the King's Own Scottish Borderers was George Hairyes who was aged 19 in 1894. So the initial J on the medal roll must be a mistake.

There is a James Hairyes on the 1911 census who is a visitor in Rochdale, Lancashire, age 35, married, born Leeds, occupation cattle drover. His wife isn't with him, so I think it is probably the right James although the age is a bit out, because your James's wife doesn't have her husband with her on the 1911 census.

Are you sure that James served in India, Zoe? The way I see it is that only George served and they have put the initial J on the medal roll instead of G. They wouldn't both have the same regimental number if they were both in the army.

Looking at George's military records on FMP, two sisters are named as Next of Kin - one of them, Annie Hairyes, address was in Wortley. The other sister was Emily, living in Leeds.

There's more info on those sisters here (and onward from this post!)

In 1881 James is with his parents in Wortley, Yorkshire.

In 1891 he is in the household of his brother-in-law Stephen Lawrence in Wortley. Occ scholar.

In 1901 he is a boarder in the household of the Beaumont family in Wortley. Occ bricklayers labourer.

Kate has already recorded the 1911 census entry above.

This is George returning to the UK in 1906. He is recorded as a private in the army, embarked on the Arabia in Aden (sailing from Bombay to London) and disembarked in Plymouth.

Can't find any evidence to suggest that James also served. Poss a family story mix up?
