Hi,

I have just googled a name in my husband's tree and it brought up this link:

http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/SearchUI/details/D6875469?descriptiontype=Full&ref=ADM+188/693/411

I see there is an option to pay for the item but what is it and would it be worth purchasing it?

Regards

It's military/Navy records

If you have an opportunity some time in the future to visit the National Archives, you can use the information shown in the record you have found to discover much more about the person.

The record will give you a brief description, how old they said they were when they joined up (not necessarily true!) details of voyages, what rank they were, their crew number and their conduct.

Once you know the ship, you can follow its voyages. Records by the end of the C19th had got rather terse, but in the earlier ones you can follow the voyages in minute and fascinating detail: what provisions were taken aboard, where exactly the ship was, what the weather was like. You will find out more about a man's day-to-day life than in virtually any other occupation.

Many thanks for the advice Phoenix.

I really wish I could get to NA but I am in Manchester with a 4 week old baby. Maybe I will get there in a year or two. I would like to see this person's record.

But you can buy it online for £3.36, so you don't have to go to TNA to see the record.

ah, I misread the previous article. I thought the download was a brief overview and there was a more comprehensive history at the NA. I will download the article :)
