Robert Curry was born 1827-1829 in Monkwearmouth or Sunderland, Co Durham, haven't found a baptism.

In 1841 he's in the household of William and Jane Curry but they are too old to be his parents, and they also had a son Robert born 1798, although I don't know what happened to him.

1841 Lands Colliery, Evenwood
William Curry 60 engineer
Jane Curry 60
Elizabeth Curry 15
Robert Curry 12
Jane Ann Curry 7
Thomas Curry 5

Don't know who Elizabeth is, Jane Ann and Thomas as children of their daughter Isabella.

Robert married Susannah Rand in 1848.

On the 1851 census he is listed as 24 and born at Sunderland

On the 1861 census he is listed as 33 and born Sunderland.

At the end of the 1861 he marries Jane Davison, her mother was Mary Ann Curry, the daughter of William and Jane!

On the 1871 census he is listed as 44 and born in Monkwearmouth.

Two of his children are living with relatives in 1871, Jane is niece to Isabella Curry, she is the daughter of William and Jane. Isabella (born Hannah Isabella) is niece to William Curry, he is the son of William and Jane.

That's been floating round in my head all day but now i've written it out Robert must be grandson to William and Jane if the relationships given on the 71 census for his children are correct.

So possible mother/father are John Curry born 1796, Robert born 1798, Elizabeth born 1800 and maybe even Jane Curry born 1804 who married in 1830.

Can anyone spot a likely baptism for Robert please?

Just found some old notes with Robert and Susannah's marriage details on! Robert is listed as full age, an engineman and his father is listed as William Curry, an engineman. Witnessed by William Johnson and Isabell Curry.

Robert can't be William and Jane's son as they would be in their mid 50's when he was born.

Could his father be William, son of William and Jane?

That would make sense, as he too was an engineer. The only problem with that is my 4x great grandfather was Robert born 1845 to William, son of William and Jane!

Then this Robert is likely an illegitimate son of one of the daughters and putting his grandfather (or uncle) down as his father.

That looks most likely to be the case, doesn't it?

The most likely mother is Elizabeth born 1800 as I don't know what happened to her, then there's Jane born 1804 who married George Alexander in 1830. Can't be Mary Ann as that would mean Robert's second wife was his half sister! Also can't be Isabella as she is too young to be his mother.

Need to find out what happened to Elizabeth.
