I`m trying to figure out if the George Shipley that was transported to Australia in 1838/39 was possibly mine.

I have a George Shipley born 18 Dec 1818, baptised 24 Feb 1819 Independent Belper and Heage Derbyshire, cannot seem to find him in anywhere after that.

There is a George Shipley born abt 1818 convicted of burglary in Derby 16 Oct 1838. He gets 14 years transportation.

He`s on the prison hulk "Justitia" til 2 Nov 1838, when he is transported on the "John Barry" to N S W, which departed 12 Nov 1838 and arrived approx. 12 July 1839.

Could someone see if there is anything on Ancestry AU, about him please.

I found him on the convicts muster ship on the John Barry but that's all.

There's a marriage and death in Tasmania but that seems to be the George Shipley that was convicted in Lancaster.

Nothing otherwise I can find

There seem to be three convicts named George Shipley who end up in Australia!

The one above who was transported on the John Barry (although I couldn't find this one on Ancestry).

There's also a George Shipley, born 1812, on the prison ship, Fortitude. He was 25, a baker and married. He was convicted at Lancaster of stealing a horse and got life. It seems as if he was transported on the Neptune in 1837. This one seems to get a conditional pardon in 1838.

Another George Shipley who was transported was also convicted in Lancaster in 1837. As far as I can see, he got 14 years and was transported on the Royal Sovereign.

The Convict Death Registers record the death of a George Shipley at Walls Stockade in November 1839. No age is given and I can't make out the name of the ship. Can anyone else make it out?

There is a public member tree on Ancestry which has a George Shipley born on 9 March 1812 in Burton. Father George (1775-1837) and mother Ann (1773-1868). This tree has him marrying a Mary Ann Deacon in Tasmania. He died in Hobart on 25 August 1885, age 74.

Thank you Shona, I downloaded that image to my computer and the second word is definitely Barry, so would say its the Derby George Shipley that died.

Now what and where was Walls Stockade and would I be able to find anything there?

My pleasure Sylvia. Julie
http://rodders.wilyfox.net/shipley/i1140.html - Rod Shipley's FH page says this convict was born 1811 Burton Latimer, Northamptonshire.. a bit of a lad.

Not the one I`m looking at Julie, the George Shipley from Derby was only 20 and still single.

Ah - it says Hassan's Walls Stockade. Does that make more sense?

A short article about the stockade here

and a grim accounting of life in the chain gang building that road

Did a bit of googling last night and looking at the maps Hassans Walls, is very rough terrain even today.

Thanks Bev, had found the first link last night, reading through the second one was enlightening.

A friend and I stayed at Pokolbin in 2008 I think and I drove us into the area for the day.. We had lunch at a pub at Kurrajong I think it was and then crossed the river on the ferry I think it was a Wiseman's ferry .. I have photos some where. I was driving a Camry and am used to country roads ... windy, steep drop, narrow etc etc, but some of the igjits with 4 wheel drives should have been locked up .. trying to drag on it .. There were quite a few historic markers where the convicts built the road .. some never used aparently .. It was such a cruel existence.
Sorry I didn't get to the library, stayed up too late, but should get there Monday Sylvia. Julie
