June 2013

Each month we will be asking members to post up family history photographs from a particular category. This month we are looking for photographs of your great-great-grandfathers (and the great-great-grandfathers of your partner and any step or adopted great-great-grandfathers etc!) and also any other male ancestors from earlier generations!

Photos posted on this thread will eventually be added to our 'Decades of Family History Photographs' forum in order to help others with dating old photographs. (You are welcome to post any photos you like directly to the Decades forum at any time; these monthly requests are just further encouragement!)

Please note that this thread is on an open forum so any captions to your photos may be picked up by Google searches. If you are lucky you may make a family history contact through your post! I made my best family history contact ever through a photograph caption posted on this site!

There is no restriction to the number of photographs you post each month - the more the merrier! However, please make separate posts if your photos are from different decades. Remember to caption your photograph and if you know the date or approximate date, please state that also. If you are unsure, then that is something we can discuss on the thread.

You will need to use Photobucket or a similar site to host your pictures. If possible please scan your photos at between 300 and 600dpi - if you need help with uploading your images see here:

This thread gives information about scanning your images:

Please make sure you have the permission of any named living people in your photos to post their image.

My 2x great grandfather William James Crisp 1831-1894, Leather Factor, photo taken in Margate in the 1880s, though at that time he lived in Sevenoaks, and later in Brockley.

This is my great-great grandfather, George Clark. He was born in 1827 in Bath, Somerset (I believe on 27th June, and if anyone can find an appropriate baptism (son of Wm, labourer), I would be very grateful!!)

George had many jobs over the years, though all connected - Furnace labourer, gas fitter, stovegrate fitter, engine fitter - mainly in Bath and Bristol but also at Huntley and Palmer's biscuit factory in Reading.

In 1849 George married my 2xg grandmother, Elizabeth Sainsbury, and they had ten children including twins. He died in 1903 at Bristol.

I think this photo was taken about 1880.

This is my great-great grandfather, Thomas Mitchell. Thomas was born in 1822 in Keynsham, Somerset.

Thomas was a stone mason, but I'm unsure as to what sort of work he actually did. In later life he was a grocer and beer seller. He married my great-great grandmother, Mary Lewis in 1844 and after her death from malignant smallpox in 1875 he married again to Elizabeth James the same year. Thomas died in 1905 aged 83 having lived most of his life in Horfield, Gloucestershire.

This photo was taken in 1878.

My 2x-great-grandfather Charles Alexander, 1821-1880, is seated in the centre.
On the left is Samuel, and on the right my great-grandfather Joseph Alexander (1851 - 1908).
The boys were the sons of Charles' 2nd wife, Mary.

This is my great-great grandfather, Nathan Maynard. Nathan was born in 1805 at Whittlesford in Cambridgeshire. He was a grocer for most of his working life but also enjoyed painting scenes of his home village some of which have been published in a book about Whittlesford.

Nathan married Catherine Smith of Wadesmill Herts in London in 1827 and they returned to Whittlesford where they had nine children. Nathan was keen on education and sent his sons to the Perse School at Cambridge.

Nathan died at his home in Whittlesford in 1863.

This photo was probaby taken at the end of the 1850s.

Do you know the name of George Clark's mother, Merry?

No I don't Shona. All I have are the details from his marriage cert (William Clark, labourer) and his birthday from his daughter-in-law's birthday book compiled in the 1890s. :o
