I'm transcribing the will of Mabell Ayling, dated 1654. She mentions one of her sons-in-law, and for the life of me I can't decipher his name.

I can't get the image onto Photobucket as it's a PDF file.
Could someone look at it for me - I can e-mail the portion concerned.

Many thanks for reading!

I'm not saying I will be able to read it (not being back that far on my tree ), but I do know how to change the image type so it can be posted here, so if you want to send it to me, Elizabeth, I'll do that! (presume you have my addy?)

Thanks, Merry! I have a clue as to the surname now, but I won't let on as I'm not sure.

Sorry for the delay, I had to find a chocolate brownie recipe for daughter instead of dealing with this!!

Elizabeth's comment:

It is the name after "in the presence of"

Earlier it mentions his daughter.

The second Nicholas is Nicholas Hudson, which might or might not help!

Is the first name Henrietta?

Phoenix suggested Hewet Hanckes, and I had already found that Mabel's son, Nicholas, also my ancestor, had a witness to his will called Mary Hanks.

I have just found this marriage, which clinches it:

Name: Hewet Hankes
Spouse's Name: Marie Ayling
Spouse's Birth Date:
Spouse's Birthplace:
Spouse's Age:
Event Date: 30 Dec 1624
Event Place: Holy Trinity,Guildford,Surrey,England
Indexing Project (Batch) Number: M01336-1

Many thanks, Phoenix and Merry.

Merry - by the way - how did you upload the image? I couldn't get Photobucket to accept it. Did you convert it?

Ignore that - not enough letters and what I thought was an a is the beginning of the next word

Ah well done Phoenix and Merry. I'm not very experienced with the pre-Commonwealth handwriting

I've now found Hewet Hankes on the Protestation Returns for Stedham, Sussex, along with a bucket-load of Aylings:
