Janet was the ninth of ten children born to James Laurie and Margaret More, her younger brother James being born four months after their father's death. Janet was only 17 months old when her father died and his gravestone states that he is buried with eight of his children who died young. The other child, Joseph, died in 1746 (age 34) along with his wife and their only child, and Janet was named as the executrix of his testament dative, at the age of 15. Janet's mother had remarried when Janet was nearly 5, to a Thomas Crichton.
