I'm helping a friend of OH compile a family tree for his Dad's birthday, and I know that his grandmother, Olive Margaret Ward, was born on 5 March 1903 in British Columbia.

I googled and it took me to Ancestry.ca and there must be something on ther because it showed this:

"Olive Walton Genealogy - Birth Records - Ancestry.ca
www.ancestry.ca/genealogy/births/history/Olive-Walton.html
Olive Margaret WaltonBorn on Sunday, April 5, 1903 in Esquimalt, British Columbia. Olive Mary WaltonBorn on Sunday, December 27, 1885 in Bruce, Ontario. "

Later she married Wilfrid Louis Ward in this country.

I'm having trouble with that link, but when I entered Olive Margaret Walton it came up with these details.

Birth date : 5 March 1903
Birth location : Esquimalt
Registration number: 1903-09-013594
BCA Number: B13819
GSU Number: 2134889

This is from the British Columbia, Canada, Birth Index, 1872-1903 and unfortunately there is no image.

I think you may be able to order the image or certificate from here

You don't have to go onto the Canadian ancestry site to look at Canadian records, you can access them from any ancestry site as long as you have the right sub.

Thanks for looking, Sue. I have a birth certificate for her, but I'm trying to find out more about her parents.

Her father is given as Harry Walter Walton, Sergeant R.G.A. at Work Paint Barracks, and her mother as Emily Hammond. Another very common surname, but I'd like to find them in England if possible.

I think it should be 'Wark Point' which was/is a barracks in Esquimalt, (Victoria) BC. Was Harry Walter Walton born in England?

I had Wark Point to start with, Sue, then changed it!

I don't know where Harry was born but Olive came over to this country.
I do have a candidate in my mind for Harry, but at present it's speculation.

I've just found the marriage of Harry and Emily:

Armed Forces registration event: Marriage
Print Close

Spouse's last name: Not available before 1911 for GRO Index Army Marriages (1881 to 1955)

I think I have the correct man - his pension records are on Ancestry.
Born 1872 in Handsworth, which makes sense as the rest of the family were from the Midlands.

Fantastic, all the children's names give, plus the marriage date in Bermuda.
At least I can start going backwards now.
