I have the loan from our local library of a book, about an inch thick, called "Ship's Deserters 1852-1900" by Jim Melton.
If you cannot find a man's entry into Aus during this period and you think he could be a seaman ... there are plenty to choose from, about 10,000 in fact. This info is mostly from Govt. Gazettes and Police Gazettes and includes private and Naval ships that were not only ships from the Uk.
Vessels belonging to the German, French, Austo-Hungarian, United States, Italian and Netherlands governments lost crew members.
If anyone would like a look up, I am only too happy to see if I can help..
If jumping ship was premediated, false names might have been given and if they were illiterate and had an accent, they might not be easily found still. Julie
