Àccording to her probate record spinster Dora Annie Thompson died at Keswick Road, Shanghai 3rd October 1928. I don't think she was living in Shanghai as it gives her address in County Durham. Is there anywhere online I can access newspapers for Shanghai?

This (pay) site has the North China Herald, but it only goes up to 1926:

There are a couple of reports in The Times and The Guardian on and after 5th October 1928 about Miss Dorothy Thompson, a sister at the Victoria Hospital who was shot and killed in Keswick Road Shanghai. Too much of a coincidence I would have thought for it not to be the same person

According to the outgoing passenger lists on Ancestry, Miss Dora Thompson, nurse, aged 35, of 68 Fenchurch St. London, travelled to Shanghai in 1922.

There are several articles about the murder in the Straits Times, which confirm that the date of death was 3rd October:

Oh yes Marg it certainly is very interesting. I thought she may have been in an accident, hence tring to find online newspapers, but I hadn't thought she may have been killed.

Round of applause to Mary from Italy for finding the newspaper articles. A tragic, but very interesting read.

Many of these sorts of articles also turn up in Trove...always worth a try.
