Many thanks Babs. These are almost certainly connected to my paternal grandma's family. Just hoping I can sort out who's who. I wonder if Harry was a ship's engineer as the one I'm after who vanished in Aus in 1912 was working for an engineering firm in Canada in 1911. I know from census the Harry I want was born c 1887 but I've been unable to find his birth in the records.

How about this one, Daphne? Could they have got him down as Henry instead of Harry?

Name: Henry Jobes
Date of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep 1885
Registration district: Sunderland
Inferred County: Durham
Volume: 10a
Page: 5638

EDIT: Well, here's the image. It says 10a 563.

Or could he be this one? I don't see any other Harvey Jobes on Ancestry. Maybe he's really Harry?

Name: Harvey Jobes
Date of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar 1887
Registration district: Sunderland
Inferred County: Durham
Volume: 10a
Page: 605

EDIT: Nor on FMP.

I'm sure you must have seen those before. Maybe you eliminated them. Anyway, over and out!

Thanks Janet, I have seen them before but I think I'll have to spend some money and get the certificates to be sure, If only the mmn was recorded on these early ones it would help. At one time, going back a few years,
I could phone Sunderland Registrar's office and ask them to check names first but now they don't seem to let you do that.
The other thing that put me off was Harry's father was a widower having lost his first wife and new baby to smallpox in 1884 and didn't marry his second wife, Harry's mother until 1886.

Sunderland BMD has a Harry Jobes birth listed in 1886.

Oh thanks Kite, I've looked there before but didn't see that one. It might be worth investing in the certificate.

Durham Records Online have a number of Jobes. You can search for free.

You may prefer to order the certificate from Sunderland RO - just that bit more personal than a GRO certificate.
