Marries Charles Bryant in Portsmouth RD 1881.

They live together in Havant on the subsequent censuses.

She gives her birthplace as Moordown Common, Dorset and her age as 49 in 1891 and 62 in 1901 (so she may or may not be on the 1841 census)

The small problem I have is that I think Moordown might have been Hampshire at that stage and I have no idea what the historic parish might have been: it is now on the borders of Bournemouth.

It was Charles's first marriage, but Emma could have been on her second or third. Can anyone find her on an earlier census?

The GRO marriage index shows Emma marrying John Bryant, not Charles. He is also John on the censuses.

ARGH! Sorry, his brother is Charles.

The Wattons appear to be in Holdenhurst, and Moordown appears to be a hamlet there, part of Hampshire in the 1840s. However, none of them appear to have a daughter of the right age to be Emma, nor is there any suitable birth on Freebmd.

There's a Mary Emma Lambert on the 1861 census age 24, an unmarried nurse born "Somerset Moordown" and living in Bedhampton, Hampshire.

And in 1841 there is an Emma Lambert age 6 in Holdenhurst, parents John and Sarah, but I haven't found her marrying a Watton yet, so don't know whether she is the same Emma as Emma Watton or not.
Emma Lambert is unmarried in 1871 and with her parents at Iford, Hampshire.

And a Mary Emma Lambert in Portsmouth in 1841, aged 5 (born in county!) Hmm, that could be lead, Kite!

Oh, so the Emma Lambert in Holdenhurst in 1841 might not be Mary Emma Lambert, then. I still can't find any Lambert / Watton marriage that fits, so she could be a red herring anyway.

Mary Lambert is in the same street in 1851 that my ancestors moved to three or four years later. Just got to kill or marry her.

I wonder if this might be Emma's baptism on FMP?

Well done, Shona, that looks very likely. Just trying to find her on the censuses now...

Edit - just realised that Emma Lambert's parents on the 1841 census were called John and Sarah! So is John Lambert the same person as John Aldridge? Too many names here!

Ah, there is a baptism for Emma Lambert, daughter of John and Sarah, so it looks like two different couples and we can probably forget the name Lambert.

I can't find any marriage between John Aldridge and Sarah Watton/Wotton on FS.

Not having much luck finding Emma Mary/Mary Emma on census records either.

Now that you've shown me who she is, she is really simple to find in 1881:

Mary A Lambert aged 40 born Maiden (?) Dorset.

Now why didn't I think of that?:d

Maiden Newton perhaps (just a stab in the dark).

Or Maiden is just a corruption of Moordown?
