I'm helping someone with their family on the island of Gigha. There is a marriage between Peter McDarmaid and Helen Galbraith in 1800.

Helen is recorded as 'sister of Dn'l Gal'th'.

Why should this be? I haven't come across this in records before. If any relationship info is given in records in this part of Argyllshire, it tends to be 'daughter of'.

Suggestions, please!

I'd guess at Daniel Galbraith.

Could it be that both their parents were dead and so her brother gave his permission for the marriage?

Thanks, UJ. I thought Donald. There are a lot of Donalds on Gigha!

Thanks, Kite, that's what I thought.

Isn't Donal(d) the Gaelic for Daniel?

(I agree, he was mentioned as her male relative, presumably her father was dead).
