View Full Version : Family History Photos - Grandmothers
March 2013
Each month we will be asking members to post up family history photographs from a particular catagory. Having covered several specific forms of dress and events over the last few months, we are now moving to photographs of specific relatives. This month we are looking for photographs of your grandmothers (and the grandmothers of your partner and any step or adopted grandmothers etc!).
Photos posted on this thread will eventually be added to our 'Decades of Family History Photographs' forum in order to help others with dating old photographs. (You are welcome to post any photos you like directly to the Decades forum at any time; these monthy requests are just further encouragement!)
Please note that this thread is on an open forum so any captions to your photos may be picked up by Google searches. If you are lucky you may make a family history contact through your post! I made my best family history contact ever through a photograph caption posted on this site!
There is no restriction to the number of photographs you post each month - the more the merrier! However, please make separate posts if your photos are from different decades. Remember to caption your photograph and if you know the date or approximate date, please state that also. If you are unsure, then that is something we can discuss on the thread.
You will need to use photobucket or a similar site to host your pictures. If possible please scan your photos at between 300 and 600dpi - if you need help with uploading your images see here:

Please make sure you have the permission of any named living people in your photos to post their image.

Incredible weren't they Val? I'm amazed the bride didn't knock her husband out with hers - no wonder he's standing so far away from her! ;)
This is my paternal grandmother, Florence Elizabeth Mitchell, 1886 to 1959, taken in 1956. Florence was the mother of 14 children and also worked in the family butchers shop. She also did all the bookkeeping and hiring and firing of staff. She and her husband and family lived "over the shop" in Bristol. Her death certificate says she died of old age though she was only 73 - the doctor said her whole body was just worn out.

This is my maternal grandmother, Winifred May Harriet Maynard (known as Mai), 1892 to 1985. She is the only grandparent I remember and ruled my home when I was a child! Mai had a bigamous marriage (I don't know if she knew that though) during WW1 and later married my grandfather after the death of her first "husband" - There's an article about her life during WW1 here:

Mary Ellen Barks 1897-1980
Early 1920's. The necklace is actually a photo of her fiancé at the time. She was engaged before she met my grandfather and apparently dumped him because he embarrassed her whilst in the market as he was commenting on ladies underwear.:eek::eek::eek:

Great photos Marg .. I can see family resemblance .. (I showed the girls at the library a photo of one of my greatgrandmothers today and they told me we have the same eyes .. a bit of poetic license lol..) I wonder if Rachel would restore the photo including you .. it is a shame that it is damaged, but it was obviously well loved by your father .. Julie
My maternal grandmother Lily Berry (nee Spence) with my grandfather on their golden anniversary, 26 April 1950.
http://i1320.photobucket.com/albums/u533/pix4janet/WalterandLily_zps145613f2.jpg
My maternal grandmother Lily Spence.
Probably 1931 somewhere in the Leeds area. Front row left to right: Uncle Jim Smith and Aunt Esther (nee Crampton), my grandparents Walter Berry and Lily (nee Spence). Aunt Esther was Lily's mother's sister.
On the back row second from left is Lily's sister Ethel Spence. I'm pretty sure the other three are some of Lily's half-siblings, the Wilsons. This seems to be a reunion of the siblings and half-siblings who grew up together in the Spence household in the 1870s-1880s.
http://i1320.photobucket.com/albums/u533/pix4janet/Berry-Spence-Wilsongrouponsteps_zps93a08f92.jpg
My maternal grandmother Lily Spence on her wedding day 26 April 1900. She is front and center with her new husband Walter Berry.
Walter's family are the three in the middle of the back row, his uncle David Pickles, aunt Ann (I don't know if she had a married name) and his mother Emma Berry (nee Pickles), plus Walter's sister Maggie at front left with her future husband Charlie Johnson behind her.
Lily's family are her aunt Esther Smith (nee Crampton) on the left behind Walter and Esther's husband Jim Smith, back right, at whose home they are gathered for the wedding; plus Lily's full sister Ethel, behind Lily; her cousin Maggie Smith, a daughter of Esther and Jim; and her half-sister Emily Wilson, front right.

My maternal grandmother Lily Spence.
Possibly 1887 or 1888? Lily's mother was first married to William Wilson, and on the 1881 in Headingley we see a mixed household: his (Sarah Jane), hers (Emily, John, Joseph) and theirs (Elizabeth/Lily, Ethel):
George Spence 51
Elizabeth Spence 42
Emily Louisa Wilson 20
John W. Wilson 18
Joseph J. Wilson 15
Sarah Jane Spence 11
Elizabeth Spence 6
Ethel Mary Spence 3
Note this last name is Ethel May, not Ethel Mary; an Ancestry mistranscription.
This photo has my grandmother Lily Spence, front left, next to her father George Spence. Her mother Elizabeth (formerly Wilson, nee Crampton) stands behind Lily. I'm guessing that the young men are John and Joe Wilson. Not too sure of the other two females. Lily's full sister Ethel is not in this picture.
