Nathaniel McNair and Sons, wood merchants and shipowners in Campbeltown, owned the Gleaner, which carried emigrants direct from Campbeltown to America, bringing back timber for shipbuilding.

1 From statutory records - Betsy McNair was born in Killean parish. Her father was Duncan McNair.
2 Duke of Argyll census of 1792 has the following entry for Killean parish - the only McNairs in the parish. The McNairs were a Lowland 'planter' family brought into Campbeltown. They tended to marry other English-speaking Lowland families and largely remained in Campbeltown. Therefore outliers in the 'Gaelic' parishes of Kintyre, eg, Killean are unusual.
