View Full Version : Family History Photos - Grandfathers
February 2013
Each month we will be asking members to post up family history photographs from a particular catagory. Having covered several specific forms of dress and events over the last few months, we are now moving to photographs of specific relatives. This month we are looking for photographs of your grandfathers (and the grandfathers of your partner and any step or adopted grandfathers etc!). (No prizes for guessing next month's catagory!!)
Photos posted on this thread will eventually be added to our 'Decades of Family History Photographs' forum in order to help others with dating old photographs. (You are welcome to post any photos you like directly to the Decades forum at any time; these monthy requests are just further encouragement!)
Please note that this thread is on an open forum so any captions to your photos may be picked up by Google searches. If you are lucky you may make a family history contact through your post! I made my best family history contact ever through a photograph caption posted on this site!
There is no restriction to the number of photographs you post each month - the more the merrier! However, please make separate posts if your photos are from different decades. Remember to caption your photograph and if you know the date or approximate date, please state that also. If you are unsure, then that is something we can discuss on the thread.
You will need to use photobucket or a similar site to host your pictures. If possible please scan your photos at between 300 and 600dpi - if you need help with uploading your images see here:
How to upload images (http://www.genealogistsforum.co.uk/forum/showpost.php?p=46496&postcount=2)
Please make sure you have the permission of any named living people in your photos to post their image.

gentle reminder.....
Please can you post photos from different decades on different posts, as it is difficult to copy them to the decades threads otherwise ;(:) (my juggling skills are poor at best!)
Thanks :)

My Maternal Granfather, Frederick, Born 1902.
I estimate this photo was taken early 1970's
This is my OH's paternal grandfather, José Ramón Bon López (1893-1963).
He ran a greengrocers shop and coal merchants in Barcelona.

I would imagine this photo was taken in the 1950s.
This is my OH's maternal grandfather, the infamous John Claud Hamilton (1895-1962).
He was born in Cork (apparently!) coming to England during WW1 and was in the merchant navy for most of his life.
http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m13/merry_monty_montgomery/Shauns%20Family%20History%20Photos/JohnHamilton.jpg
This photo was taken between 1917 and 1920.
This is my paternal grandfather (second right, at the back) George Charles Burchill (1880-1951) with some unknown people, though I do wonder if any of the younger children are his.
George was a butcher by trade and lived his whole life in Bristol. He and my grandmother had 14 children whilst his five siblings only managed five children between them!

I'm not sure when this photo was taken. Maybe about 1920 or a bit before?
This is my maternal grandfather, Walter Henry Clark (1888-1965).
Walter was a designer and later qualified as an architect, though his first love was painting. He was born in Somerset but lived most of his life in London, Wiltshire and Oxfordshire.

My maternal grandfather Edgar Newey 1883-1934
Between 1926 and 1934, outside the Acorn Inn, Needwood, Burton on Trent. They took over the pub in 1926 and he died in 1934. Granny took over the running of the pub after his death and ran it until her death in 1973.

Probably the 1900s. My grandfather Walter Berry is 3rd from right in the back row with the big ears. Don't laugh, they afforded him perfect pitch which I think he might have inherited through his mother's Pickles line from Cowling. Walter's full name was Walter Pickles Berry.
These are the men of the Ingram Organ shop in Edinburgh. Walter had completed a seven-year apprenticeship with the Laycock & Bannister organbuilding firm in the Glusburn / Crosshills / Sutton-in-Craven area of West Yorkshire where he was born.
In 1900 he married, and in 1905 moved his wife and two daughters to 5 Shandon Place, Edinburgh where a third daughter was born. The family archives are full of postcards from Walter working abroad in those days, many of them from Holland. In 1912 they left Edinburgh to settle in the United States.
The back of the photo is imprinted with "J. Anderson, 121, High Street, Dunbar" so perhaps a day's outing at the sea? A completely irrelevant aside: just across the street from the photographer's shop is the birthplace of John Muir (http://www.jmbt.org.uk/content/) who emigrated to the U.S. and became a renowned naturalist.
