St. Ervan baptism, marriage & burial register 1699, image 63.
I can't make out the name of George's mother.
If I squint it looks a bit like Lyhdia, but it's quite a stretch.
Thanks for your prompt response, Lindsay. I guess I'll have to trawl the marriages in the hope of finding it recorded more clearly.
They have a son Richard in 1697
Second from top rhs on previous page, Henry Eplet has a daughter Philip.
George's mother is called Philip?
Thanks Phoenix. I know my Cornish lot have many females called Philippa, Philip is a new version!
Ooh yes just found marriage
Samuel Eplet & Philip Hicks 1696!
Nell, I've never worked out whether all the Matthew, Philip and Denis etc were called by men's names. I have a lot of West Country examples in my family.
Well I don't have any female Denises or Matthews. But Philip/pa and Honor/Honour are names that are very popular in my Cornish lot. I have yet to discover the original ones.
Oh, the number of times I've done sex changes on my Scottish lot when I'd assumed Duncan, Christian, Nicolas and Angus were men! Also came across a Jacob and was sure he was a he. He became a she when I found out it was short for Jacobina.

Well you have me amazed Pippa (Philippa), Denise (Denis) I can understand,
but Matthew!! ..
Nicola(s), Christian (Christine) yes but Duncan and Angus ...
wow I would have been really stumped .. never too old to learn here ..
Don't ask how it was pronounced, but Matthew is a variant of Martha. (I have never understood how frenchmen could be called Anne)
I've learned something new in genealogy. I know they do it abroad - Frenchmen are Jean-Marie for example, and the writer of "All Quiet on the Western Front" was called Eric Maria Remarque.
Mary from Italy

And John Wayne was called Marion, of course.

Marion seems to be quite common as a man's name in the US, Mary.
In principle, Marian for a woman and Marion for a man over here. But I had a female cousin Marion.
In principle, Marian for a woman and Marion for a man over here. But I had a female cousin Marion. My cousin Marion is a lass. Perhaps it's another Scottish thing.
My Mum's best friend was Marion and definitely a woman. She also had a step-grandmother called Marion (who pronounced it Mary-on).
Shirley can also be a chap's name, like Beverley and Hilary. But it is confusing, especially if you find a marriage witness and you don't know which sex s/he is. In my case, with the baptism I'd be fairly certain that "Philip his wife" is a lady, especially as she's given birth!!!

Until John Wayne, I thought Marion/Marian was female .. but Matthew and Angus I am still amazed ..
