I've just discovered that my ggg-grandparents, Flora McLean and Duncan McNair (and most of their children) emigrated from Scotland to Canada between 1841 and 1851.

This explains all the fruitless SP searches!

I have managed to trace the family in the Canadian census records (I have a world sub for Ancestry).

However, how do I go about getting death certs from Canada, please? Or, indeed, finding our when someone died. Can't see anything obvious on Ancestry.

Whereabouts in Canada did they die (or live, at least), Shona? I don't think there is a national BMD register but it will be held by the province or territory.

Ontario for most of them. I'll ignore the Nebraska stray for the time being.

Shona, I have Ontario death registration details going up to at least 1930 which I got when Ancestry offered free access to Ancestry.ca a few years back. I've no idea what the cutoff date was and the details varied depending on the dates.

There is some information on the Ontario Archives website but it seems that civil registration of deaths didn't start there until 1869:
http://www.archives.gov.on.ca/en/tracing/the_records.aspx

Some public trees on ancestry show Duncan dying in 1851 and Flora "after 1861" which probably means between 1861 and the start of civil registration. Ancestry does have the death registrations from 1869 to 1938 and you get to view the actual certificates:

FamilySearch also has an index but not the images:

Cyndi's List has some other sources:

Thanks for the info. I've managed to view the deaths of two of Flora and Duncan's sons. I was surprised by the lack of info in these records. Names of parents don't appear in the earlier ones.

It seems as if Flora and Duncan died before official registration. I've searched various cemetery databases and can't find them. I had hoped that finding the McNair family in Canada would lead me to the names of the parents. *sighs*

Noticed that a number of the trees on Ancestry name Flora's parents as Lachlane McLean and Flora McFarlane. Another has her parents as Allan and Flora McLean. I'll contact the tree owners to see where this came from. I've spotted a number of errors in all the trees I've looked at so far, though!
