I have a Robina Jane Henderson nee Smith born in 1861 Dundee who is in prison in Dundee in 1901 aged 36 (sic). I've not been able to find a death for her but have found a marriage on familysearch 28 Jan 1907 Woodstock, Oxford, Ontario, Canada for a Rebecca Henderson aged 40 with the right parents names (Robert Smith and Mary Hollinger) to a Matthew Wilson aged 46.

I haven't got a worldwide sub on Ancestry but have been trying to find evidence of them afterwards without success so far - can anyone see anything of them?

The marriage says she was a widower, born in Scotland and a Presbyterian(sp).

You can search and view the 1911 Canada census free on this site:

On the marriage, Matthew is a marine engineer, born somewhere I can't read, Ontario, parents Matthew Wilson and Annie O'Brien. I haven't managed to find him and Robina on the 1911 Canada census yet but I see Robina was spelling her name Rubena on the marriage.

I've not found them either. Robina had three children from her first marriage and I *think* her two daughters Eliza S(chultzen) and Margaret M Henderson - Lizzie and Maggie - might be the two of the same name who sail from Liverpool to New York in October 1910.

Residence when married Woodstock
Place of Birth Welland Co., Ont.

As a marine engineer he would have been well situated in Welland County with the Welland Canal linking Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, allowing ocean-going vessels to pass between the upper Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence and onward to the Atlantic: Welland Canal (http://www.wellandcanal.com/hist.htm)

According to that web site, construction on the third Welland Canal was completed in 1887, and the fourth and current Welland Canal was mainly constructed between the years of 1913 and 1932, so Matthew might well have been in the thick of it.

Thank you Janet - my knowledge of Canada is fairly low!

Well, this at least clarifies the witnesses on the marriage.

I think Susanna McMullen is perhaps the officiant's wife, though. I couldn't make out the handwriting for the other name myself, but this transcription makes him Arthur Wedge.

I think Robina may have emigrated as a a domestic. There's a Robina Henderson aged 39 in 1903 travelling from Liverpool - I don't think she had any family there, although some later went to Canada

Don't know if it leads you anywhere useful, but here's a widowed Arthur Wedge marrying a widow from North Wales.
Arthur Wedge and Mary Gertrude Bingley marriage (http://search.ancestry.ca/iexec?htx=View&r=5543&dbid=7921&iid=ONMS932_559-0469&fn=Arthur&ln=Wedge&st=r&ssrc=&pid=2253014)
A lot of information there, but is it relevant? Better check first if he's any kind of serial witness. I didn't get that far.

Arthur Wedge doesn't seem to be a serial witness but although Canadian he is living in lodgings with several Scottish people in 1911 so I would think that's the connection.

That's her thanks Shona - her children are with her sister Margaret Smith in 1901.

That's her thanks Shona - her children are with her sister Margaret Smith in 1901. I did wonder where the children were. Have you looked at the 1901 census image on SP? The Ancestry transcript seems to have doubled up the women - Robina appears and Robina Smith and then Robina Henderson.

No I haven't yet but I noticed that - I assume they're listed in both their married and maiden names which is odd. I ought to look at it but I'm getting through credits at an alarming rate again :-) It's Robina's sister who is my great great grandmother.

Margaret Smith?

Agree re credits on SP! OH said he'll give me a year's supply of credits for SP and various Irish ancestry sites as my Christmas prezzie. He didn't look well chuffed when I said I didn't want him to single-handedly kick start the entire economy. :o

Yes, Margaret Smith - they're very tiring:-)
