children by three different fathers.

Given that Sophia's surname is Thomson, her father is likely to be a Thomson. There were seven men with the surname Thomson in Aberdour who would have been the right age to be Sophia's father. Six were married and one was single. The single man was a merchant seaman named Archibald Thomson who lived at Aberdour Wester Village North Side - which is where Janet Carstairs lived.
