December 2012

Each month we will be asking members to post up family history photographs from a particular catagory. This month we are looking for photographs of sailors. Do you have any sailors photos from the past?

Photos posted on this thread will eventually be added to our 'Decades of Family History Photographs' forum in order to help others with dating old photographs. (You are welcome to post any photos you like directly to the Decades forum at any time; these monthy requests are just further encouragement!)

Please note that this thread is on an open forum so any captions to your photos may be picked up by Google searches. If you are lucky you may make a family history contact through your post! I made my best family history contact ever through a photograph caption posted on this site!

There is no restriction to the number of photographs you post each month - the more the merrier! However, please make separate posts if your photos are from different decades. Remember to caption your photograph and if you know the date or approximate date, please state that also. If you are unsure, then that is something we can discuss on the thread.

You will need to use photobucket or a similar site to host your pictures. If possible please scan your photos at between 300 and 600dpi - if you need help with uploading your images see here:

How to upload images (http://www.genealogistsforum.co.uk/forum/showpost.php?p=46496&postcount=2)

Please make sure you have the permission of any named living people in your photos to post their image.

My 1st cousin once removed.

My grandfathers brother William Henry Newey 1891-1950.

Royal Navy 1909-1921

He had a habit of going AWOL. The story was the family were told he was lost at sea as his ship had sunk. He turned up at my grandparents house and nearly gave my grandmother a heart attack, she thought he was dead. He'd missed the ship sailing and so lived.

Gwynne, those photos are astounding. Were they all from Lowestoft?

I've got some sweet pics of my late dad. Can I post them without his surname out of respect for my mum?

Hi Shona, yes they were. W C Capps on his birthday was in my Dad's collection and the other 2 were copied for me by cousins.

Yes, that's fine, Shona.

The is one of the few of OH's unnamed photos which we have managed to identify since we started his tree:

http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m13/merry_monty_montgomery/Shauns%20Family%20History%20Photos/RobertHACotton.jpg

He's Robert Henry Alexander Cotton, 1893-1960, OH's first cousin twice removed (in later years he was the spitting image of OH!). This photo was taken in June/July 1911 when he was first posted aboard HMS Renown.

EDIT: OH points out the photo wasn't unnamed - it said "Bob" on the back!! lol

This is my great-grandfather, Joseph Thomas Purkis, who was also an Engineer in the Royal Navy. He was the father of the above.

Post 15:

I would think the first one is 1920s just before he left the RN because of illness.

I don't know what rank it shows.

The second one was taken in Sydney so I would hazard a guess at 1911.

Joseph was born in 1857.

The one of him when he was younger was taken by Arthur Debenham of Southsea and it says it was taken in 1892.

The one when he was older was taken in Streatham. He retired in 1909 so it will be 1900 - 1910. They were living in Streatham on the 1911 census.
