I have found Oscar's birth in March 1892

Here he is in 1911 - http://interactive.ancestry.co.uk/2352/rg14_06286_0431_03/43136411?backurl=http%3a%2f%2fsearch.ancestry.co.u k%2fcgi-bin%2fsse.dll%3frank%3d1%26new%3d1%26MSAV%3d0%26ms T%3d1%26gss%3dangs-g%26gsfn%3doscar%26gsln%3dBeeston%26msbdy%3d1892%2 6sbo%3d0%26uidh%3dnn3%26ti%3d5538%26pcat%3dROOT_CA TEGORY%26h%3d43136411%26db%3d1911England%26indiv%3 d1&ssrc=&backlabel=ReturnRecord

where he is described as "grandson" - what I am trying to work out, without buying a cert, is who his parents were. At first I thought it might be the Walter William in 1911 who is listed as "son", but I don't think that can be right.

Do you think that the Frederick O Beeston in 1901, could be him?

It looks likely, Joan.

Here is Ann Beeston mum in 1891:

BEESTON, Frederick Oscar Head Married M 29 1862 Carpenter Basingstoke, Hampshire
BEESTON, Ann Wife Married F 30 1861 Shepton Mallet, Somersetshire
BEESTON, Ethel May Daughter F 3 1888 Hook, Hampshire
BEESTON, Ada Emily Daughter F 2 1889

The father is Frederick Oscar, so looks good.

Oooh thank you Elizabeth - yes it does look good :)

I also found his probate record and when he died in 1966 he left £6963.00

I guess that was quite a lot of money

And why would probate have been granted to Lloyds Bank - does that mean the bank would have been the executors of the will?

You will see that Edmund is used as a second name for George.

Grandfather Frederick's will is on the Probate Calender in 1925.

He names George Edmund Beeston and Walter William Beeston.

Yes quite likely.

Thanks Marg :)

Oscar's wife, Nora Scrutton, was one of the many sisters of Dorothy Scrutton, who I think was my maternal grandmother.

Nora and Dorothy were in service together at the home of the Chilean born Katharine Macandrew

I believe that Katharine left/gave money to Dorothy, and suspect she may have also left some to Nora.

If I have found the right record, then Katharine Macandrew died in 1941 leaving the sum of £16578.18s ( I don't know whether the National Probate Calendar shows all the beneficiaries, or just the main ones )

I think I should get a copy of the will

Thanks Marg and Elizabeth

Elizabeth, yes that's the record I was looking at :)

In 1891 Katharine and her family were living next door to the Scruttons (who were farmers) in Great Horkesley- although Dorothy & Nora were not yet born -so I'm finding it all quite intriguing

To go back a few posts, the National Probate Calendar lists executors, not beneficiaries.

Thanks UJ - I hadn't realised that :o - though I guess beneficiaries & executors are often the same people.

I've never sent for a will before, so any tips would be gratefullly received - it looks as though it's cheapest to apply to York, although not necessarily the fastest way.

You can apply to any probate office and it's £6 wherever you apply to. I'll email you a copy of the form.
