I'm trying to find more out about Oswald Franklin Bates. He married Ellen Shaw, the daughter of Hiram and Hannah Shaw, so she is related to my OH.

I think he might have been a journalist, but I'm not sure.

He died in 1932 and his probate entry is on Ancestry.
I can't find out what happened to Ellen, either. She was born in 1859 in the Sheffield district. OH's great-great grandmother was her sister.

Well, he was a journalist according to an obituary. He was involved with poultry and ran a journal on the subject!

as there were there in 1911. Then he seems to have moved to London (eRolls).

Yes, there's a probate entry for her. She died 28th Dec 1911.

Ooh, thanks, Merry. They moved about a bit so I wasn't sure where/when to look.

Their daughter Una became a moderately well-known soprano.

It seems they took her home to Sheffield for burial as there is a burial on 2nd Jan 1912 at All Saints Ecclesall. There is no other death for an Ellen Bates at the same time.
