According to records on Ancestry, banns were called 4, 11 & 18 Sep 1869 for John Ledger, widower & Letitia Bethell, at St. James Clerkenwell. In the margin is written Nov 19, but I can't find a marriage on that date at that church.
The GRO indexes have a marriage between John Ledger & Letitia Bethell registered Holborn district Dec 1870. Again, no marriage in the church for Nov 19, 1870.
It is of course possible they married in the register office and the answer would be to get the marriage cert - but I don't want to spend the money. Why would they call banns and then call off the marriage - and if it didn't happen, why was Nov 19 written in the margin of the banns book?
