*Former warship, HMS Mars, was anchored in the River Tay from 1869 until 1929. The Mars took destitute and orphaned boys from all over Scotland. Some were sent to the Mars after committing petty crimes. It would take 400 boys, who wore naval uniforms and slept in hammocks. They remained on The Mars until they were 16. An estimated 6,500 boys served on the ship.

On 9 April 1892, John's five-month-old sister, Margaret, died. Later that year, his father died. His mother was pregnant at the time. That baby, also named Margaret, died in 1893. Janet/Jessie married Patrick McGrattan in 1899.

20 February 1933 at Balmule Farm Cottages, Fife, age 46 years. Cause: bronchitis and pneumonia. Death registered by son, John.
