View Full Version : Trying again to find my grandfathers half siblings.

Margaret in Burton

My great grandmother, Ann Birch was married three times, the third was my great grandfather.
She had 3 children from her first marriage to James Barker.

Arthur James Barker 1883-1913
Annie Eleanor Barker b 1885
Harry Barker 1888-1888

One child to her second husband Thomas Green

Ethel Green Barker, later known as Ethel Green or Ettie. She was born before her parents marriage. b 1890

All children born in Burton on Trent, Staffordshire

I have found Arthur James Barker in 1911 and have his death cert

I cannot find Annie Eleanor Barker in 1911 or a marriage or death.

In 1901 she is employed in Derby. RG13 piece 3214 folio 89 page 5

Ethel Green Barker, listed as Ettie Green, is with her mother and my great grandfather in 1901 RG13; Piece: 2646; Folio: 47; Page: 2

I can't find her after that either. She isn't with her mother in 1911 nor can I find a marriage or death.

Can anyone have more luck than me?

Who was her third husband, please? Could the half-siblings be using that name?

Margaret in Burton
11-11-12, 15:17
Thomas Henry Yates

Hadn't even considered that Shona.

Arthur James Barker definitely kept the Barker name.

In the 1901 Annie Eleanor is calling herself Eleanor. There is a 1909 marriage in Ecclesall Bierlow between Arthur Davidson and either Eleanor Annie Barker or Charlotte Eleanor Rhodes.

In 1911 there is an Eleanor Annie Davidson aged 25 b Burton with Arthur and a son

The Eleanor Davidson who died in Sheffield in 1952 is buried at Abbey Lane Cemetery. Her burial is on the Sheffield Indexers Site. http://www.sheffieldindexers.com/BurialIndex.html

Where it says she is died at 2 Herries Lane, this is the address for what is now the Northern General Hospital. She shares her grave with Arthur.

I've a feeling that the Ethel Green - George H Plummer marriage may not be mine.

I've found a death for Ethel Plummer

Name: Ethel Plummer
Birth Date: 6 Dec 1895
Date of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar 1972
Age at Death: 76
Registration district: Burton upon Trent
Inferred County: Staffordshire
Volume: 9b
Page: 56

There is an Ethel Green b 1895 on the 1911 census born in Swadlincote and living in Church Gresley which would come under Burton Registration District.

Yes, I've been playing with that for a while, but I can't be doing with these people who don't have a middle Christian name! lol

There's even an Ethel Green Walton dying, but I think she is a red herring!! I noticed there are some Walton/Green births back in Burton district, but the first one is the same Q as the marriage. These surnames are a bit too commonplace to call :(

There's a private tree on Ancestry that includes Ethel and I've been trying different forenames for her husband (as George doesn't work!) in case they have a husband for her, but no joy yet. Perhaps the tree belongs to Marg!!! lol

There is an Ethel Walton death Jan-Mar 1958 Nottingham, age 67. And there is a corresponding entry in the National Probate Calendar for 1958:

WALTON Ethel of 9 Eastwood Street Bulwell Nottingham (wife of George Walton) died 17 January 1958 Administration Nottingham 11 February to the said George Walton retired labourer. Effects £303 3s 2d.

Doesn't prove whether it's your Ethel or not, though!

Arghhhhhhhhhh!

Yes that is my tree. I deleted it though which is why I assumed it wasn't mine. No further forward then. I'll have to think about whether I'll send for the marriage cert.

I asked dad last night if he remembered grandad talking about his half siblings. Nothing, but then again that's the usual answer from dad when I ask him family history questions. He usually remembers stuff after I've found out.:rolleyes:
Messaged my cousin yesterday and asked her to ask her dad when she sees him. He is younger than dad but has been a mine of info and is interested in the family tree too. He may not know anything but we'll see.

The Notts Archives online catalogue says they have marriages at Ruddington St Peter for that date but we don't know whether they got married there. I could look at that particular church next time I go, but I couldn't look at every church in the district and they don't have register office marriages there.

Ah, that didn't occur to me, wasn't thinking straight. Of course I don't expect you to look at every church in the area. If you could look at the one in Ruddington I would appreciate it.

Well, they didn't get married at Ruddington St Peter. :(

I only remembered after I'd looked at those PR's that there is supposed to be a way to figure out where a couple might have got married from looking at page ranges and stuff. Don't know if it will work for this one, but I'll have a go.
