When Mum was a schoolgirl, in Godalming in the 1930s, an elderly man with wispy hair used to come and play his flute to the children.

From what she said, it was rather embarassing, and probably annoyed the teachers, but he was too important to be denied.

His daughter had married a famous explorer.

I thought it was Scott, and investigated his family, but really got nowhere.

Yesterday, I was at a conference, when someone mentioned Godalming church and Thackeray Turner. Something stirred in the sludge of my memory..

Hugh Thackeray Turner, 8th March 1853-1937 Dec 11th. His daughter Ruth married George Mallory :o

Family legend, with a nugget of truth :D. If I can get things wrong like that, how do I expect other stories to be 100% correct:d:rolleyes:
