James McCrudden, a Catholic from rural Monaghan, ran at least one pub in the heart of the Protestant Shankhill in Belfast. He was 'burnt out'.

Date, place and cause of death:
12 August 1932, aged 57, at Drumdart, County Monaghan. Cause of death: Cerebral embolism and cardiac failure. Present at death was his 16-year-old daughter, Kathleen, who also registered the death, not his wife.

This suggests that he was visiting relatives in Monaghan at the time of his death, while his wife remained at home in Belfast with the younger children. The farm of Drumdart was owned by the Treanor family. Treanor was his mother's maiden name and other McCruddens also married Treanors.
