I woke up thinking about this lady this morning. She was a distant relative and the family story goes that she was cheated out of quite a considerable fortune by a relative, a ne'er-do-well, who befriended her in her old age and moved in with her.

She died "in the 1970s", unmarried, probably in Leeds, born 1895. I would like to know when she died and if probate was granted. Her death isn't showing up on Lancsbmd nor on Freebmd.

If someone could have a look for me I would be most grateful.

Thankyou.

Oooh, thankyou both, I think Libby's looks right. There was a Manchester connection but I do wonder why she died there and not in Leeds. Odd.

The story goes that the ne'er-do-well didn't tell anyone she had died and she was buried without much ceremony. He then said "She didn't leave a Will, you know". The family knew this wasn't true as someone had accompanied her to the solicitor's Office many years before to alter her will. But if he had found her will and destroyed, what would be the point, there were other closer relatives to inherit if she died intestate.

There's a Pamela Holden born 11th Nov 1894 died Dec 1973 Manchester.

That date of birth is on her baptism (Leeds Non Con register) on Ancestry.

Haha Merry, I thought I'd slipped that one past you!

For once, I'm not bothered about the previous generations, it's Pamela's money that's concerning me.

If she was declared intestate, there won't be a public record of that anywhere, I take it?

I don't know.

BTW, Ancestry's Probate Calendar only goes up to 1966. I also searched The London Gazette, but didn't see anything.

Thanks Merry. I think this is going to be one of those niggling little things that will never have an answer.

I think 1973 is in the gap between Notts Archives' various sets of National Probate Calendars, so I can't go and look it up there for you.

Thanks for the thought Kate.

There'll be an admon somewhere if she had any assets at the time of her death.

Mary

Oh, durh! Of course! Thankyou.

She was the last of the line and lived a comfortable life in a nice spacious house, so there was something to leave.

UPDATE

Found her admon (so that fits with the family story that there was no will) and her estate was divided between two nieces who had long since been estranged from the family - so estranged that I didn't even know they existed until a few years ago.

Sadly both are recently deceased, so no help there.

Even sadder, I have just found a message (undated) from the daughter of the ne'er-do-well, asking if anyone knows anything about her father. I have traced the daughter as far as Facebook but there has been no movement on her page since 2011, so I must assume the worst (she was born in 1941).

So that seems to be the end of that. The blackguard got away with it!

Ancestry has about 50% coverage of death regs 2007-2013. Pm me if you want me to look for a 2011+ death reg for the dau of the ne'er-do-well.

Thankyou Merry, I will do that now.

Have you looked for the daughter of th ne'er-do-well on the wills and probate website? That comes right up to 2015 I think. You have to do each year individually, but shouldn't take too long.

Yes, I have looked Tom, but unfortunately there is some doubt about her married name!

Thanks though.

That's a shame OC. Thought it would be worth suggesting.
