Hi,

I am looking for the marriage of my great x 5 grandparents Joseph Booth & Martha (surname unknown).

They are both on the 1841 census is Bradfield, South Yorkshire and living with them is my great x 4 grandparents; Levi & Ann Booth.

Martha died in 1842 and is buried at St Nicholas, Bradfield aged 77 on the 29th October 1842.

Joseph is still alive on the 51 census and still with Levi & Ann. He is aged 87 and states he is born at Dobb Carr which is in Bradfield. He died a year later aged 88.

I believe that Joseph & Martha had 6 children, the first being John Booth who was born in 1787. His baptism was in Bradfield.

There are a couple of public trees on Ancestry that give Martha's surname as Cawthorne, but they dont give any source for that information or any information on any marriage between Joseph & Martha.

Any help finding the marriage is much appreciated.

Many thanks.

Can you say why you think John Booth 1787 was the first of their children, please, Claire? There are these baptisms at Bradfield on FamilySearch with father Joseph Booth but it doesn't give mother's name:

Joseph 24 Sep 1769
Joseph 21 Apr 1782
John 2 Dec 1787
Joel 8 Dec 1789
Mary 27 May 1792
Samuel 28 May 1797
Sarah 26 Apr 1801

Obviously Joseph and Martha would be too young to be the parents of the first of these, but how do we know which of the rest belong to the same parents?

I can't see Levi on FamilySearch but his age on the censuses suggests he was born about 1804. Have you found a baptism for him, and does it show mother's name?

Hi Kate,

I located the baptisms in the original registers a while ago now and I must have missed Joseph's for some reason. John's baptism gave the abode of Dob Carr as did the baptisms for the next 4 children.

Levi is a mystery. I have not located a baptism for him which is very odd as they baptised all their other children. I've tried neighbouring churches whilst I was at the archives but not found anything. Really frustrating.

If none of the baptisms show the mother's name, couldn't Martha be Joseph's second wife and Levi be her child from before she married Joseph?

Levi is the youngest child. Not sure its possible for him to be Martha's child before Joseph.

1851 Census
BOOTH, Levi
WORTLEY, Yorkshire (West riding)
HO107 piece 2335 folio 397 page 2
According to the 1851 Census Levi was born c. 1804 at Dob Carr.

Levi's age varies a few years on each census and death. He's 47 on the 51 census; 57 on the 61 census; 65 on the 71 census, and on his grave stone it stated he was 77 when he died on the 27th June 1878.

Why not? Do any of the baptisms state the mother's name?

I was just going to say that surely we don't know if Martha was the mother of any of the children.

There don't seem to have been any children called Levi baptised in Bradfeld at all

From when I was looking at Bradfield parish records at this time, none of the baptisms for any child showed the mother's name :( Not helpful for researchers at all.

I suppose I cannot be 100% sure that Martha is the mother of all children but just asssumed (I know, never assume).

There is another Levi Booth born in Bradfield and baptised there on the 7th Sept 1828. He was the son of Levi's brother Samuel Booth and his wife Elizabeth.

Do you know whether Joseph left a will, Claire?
