Hi,

I cannot locate Charles on the 1911 census at all. I've been searching since the 1911 was released but have not found any likely candidate.

I have him on the 1901 census living with his mother Mary (who is wrongly listed as Brooks when she is in fact Mary Jones). He is aged 9 which is correct as he was born in 1891.

Then I have nothing on him until he marries Harriet Eastwood on the 17th December 1917 in Sheffield. On the marriage cert, he claims to be aged 22 (he continued with his false age up until his death) and was a steel grinder. He didnt name a father but his father is William Jones, Painter.

After this, he works in various steel roles until his death apart from one baptism of a child of his that stated he was a travelling boot repairer!

Any help much appreciated :)

How do you know he was born in 1891 and was the son of Mary Brooks/Jones? (Just checking before I go off searching! lol)

Could you give us the 1901 census ref or tell us where he was born, please :)

I've found him now.

Have you got Charles and Mary Brooks in 1911?

Hi Merry,

I have Charles' birth cert which shows he was the son of William Jones, Painter, & Mary Jones nee Buxton. He was born on the 2nd December 1891 (the 2nd December bit is the part he actually told the truth on as my nan always said that the 2nd Dec was her father's birthday).

Mary Jones is on the 1911 census lodging with Jeremiah Fitzgerald at 172 Cuthbert Bank Road, Sheffield. Also here with her is her granddaughter Ethel Jones who was the illegitimate daughter of her daughter Beatrice. This address is what Charles gave for himself on his 1917 marriage but he wasnt at this address with his mother on the 1911.

No idea who Mr Brooks was and what became of him after 1901.

Do you know if Charles was in the army for any of WW1?

I dont Merry. I have looked for any army records and not found any likely, though I know that doesnt mean he wasnt in the army.

Perhaps he should have been at home with his mother, but was not included for some reason?!!

At least you know from the address info and birthday etc that you are on to the right man. Without that you might well have got very stuck!

I really appreciate you all for trying.

It took me years to make a breakthrough with this man due to his year of birth being earlier than everyone realised.

I had considered that he should have been listed with his mother at Jeremiah's address but then I thought why would he miss him off when he included Mary's granddaughter who was there.

Perhaps he was staying somewhere else for a night or two? I have several people in my tree who appear twice on the same census in different places, so it's just as likely that some people would not appear because both households imagined the other will have recorded them.

That sounds like the most plausible explanation I think Merry. Such a shame as I really wanted to see what he was doing on this census :(

I suppose there's always the possibility he's with another family and has been either listed or transcribed with their surname by mistake!

Again, thats another good possibility. Maybe he will just turn up somewhere one day *keeps fingers crossed*
